I know there are previous threads about this topic, but they haven’t helped me. I create a scene and save the scene. Then I move the object and save as scene2 and save scene2. But both scenes show scene2. I am unable to create different scenes. The thumbnails show the different scenes, but the actual scenes are both the same. All changes I make are reflect in current and previous scenes. It does not seem to save scenes properly. All the boxes in the “properties to update” are ticked. So that’s not the issue. I have disabled my extensions, so it’s not interference from extensions. I have both SU 2021 Pro and SU 2024 and have the problem with both, so it’s unlikely to be a program glitch. It seems like I am missing or misunderstanding something. Would appreciate any help. I really want to make scenes so that I can create an animation.
You clearly have a misunderstanding of how scenes work in SketchUp. Consider each scene as a camera positions. They show the state of the model form the various views. If you move an object after creating a scene, it will show as moved in that scene, too.
If you want to create scenes that show something in various poisitions, you need to make copies of the object for each position. Give different tags to each copy and use the tags to determine which object is visible in each scene.
There is nothing wrong with SketchUp and what you are seeing is not caused by extensions.
Here’s an example from an animation I did. I have set the Color by Tag. The ornage is one copy of the components with one tag, the greeen have another tag. There are a bunch more in this model.
Here the scenes are strung together into an animation.
Elmer’s No. 5 Geared Engine
By the way, SketchUp for Schools is a web-based version for school children. Is that what you are using?
Ok thanks for that info. It is indeed more complicated than I had thought. So I did go ahead and generate tags, copies and was able to successfully generate two different scenes now. So thanks for that guidance. Now a second question: when I use animation, it just toggles between the scenes. So Sketchup doesn’t actually generate a movie where the object is shown to smoothly move from it’s position in scene 1 to its position in scene 2? I guess I will have to purchase a plug-in for that kind of movie animation, right?
No SketchUp won’t interpolate object positions from the first position to the second. You would need to create a copy of the object for each position and a scene for each copy and then export the entire set of scenes as an animation. Did you look at the animation of the little geared engine? That uses 23 copies of the moving parts and 23 separate scenes.
You can do it without an extension. I did that. It’s really not that difficult to do. You could get Fredo6’s Animator extension if you want to use an extension instead.
