Hi,
I am getting the message ‘This does not appear to be a sketchup model’ every time i try to open file. This is a very important file for my university work and i have possibly lost months of modelling.
I have it saved on a removable Sandisk USB D drive, which i save to and safely eject to transfer between my laptop and pc at university, it has been fine for weeks. I used it on my pc last night and saved it all fine, then today i tried opening it from my laptop like it did just 2 days ago and it wont open. I also noticed the thumbnail image is not where i saved at. The .skb file also has the same issue.
I cannot find anything in my recovered files folder as it didn’t crash i saved and closed it as normal. Opening with notepad++ all of the code seems normal but i cannot get it to open and i have tried everything online, and even tried 3rd party recovery apps but nothing works.
I will try and share it if anyone could fix it or open it because i really do not want to redo months of work…
The .skp file is corrupted. It does not have the expected SketchUp header.
Working on a file saved directly to a USB drive has proven to be problematic for many users. Unfortunately it results in an usuable file. The best work flow is to copy the file to the internal drive before opening it, save your work on the internal drive, and then copy it to the USB drive.
I’m not sure what you mean by that.
You could share the .skb file. It may be there is something recoverable in it.
To me it doesn’t seem normal at all - there is no SketchUp header. It might be just random data. Is it a result of some data recovery software?
The recommended workflow is to avoid working from removable storage devices. You should be saving to a regular folder on your computer’s internal drive, and copy the file to the external storage only when you have closed it.
Ah … If you had started a LayOut file using the .skp file you could have extracted a copy of the .skp from the LayOut file.
I’m afraid at this point it’s time to start over.
In addition to saving your file on the internal drive, I would suggest saving a copy of it to Trimble Connect. Since you have a Pro subscription you have unlimited storage on Trimble Connect.
