Tags palette and screen space

My own permanent fix was fiddling with the .nib file:

I’ve also found the original fix of deleting the PrivatePreferences.json file to be temporary - it sometimes works after restarting SU, but often doesn’t.

Though it is working at the moment…

May try Mike’s fix later if/when the issue recurs.

Having same issue here on Catalina 10.15.7 (19H1419)
SketchUp Version 21.1.331

:frowning:

Same problem with latest MacOS 12.0.1 Monterey. SU pro subscription version 21.1.331

Succeeded in getting the tags window back to normal by closing the app and then opening again with an older saved version of the file I’m working on, which still had a wide tag name field, then opening my current file.

I am on BigSur 11.6 and SU Pro 21.1.331.

However I upgraded to BigSur in an unsuccessful attempt to resolve this issue,

I first experienced the problem on Mojave.

Regenerating a new privatePreferences.json file fixed the issue for me as well.

However that did cause me to lose all my other extension preferences.

I then restored my original privatePreferences.json file,

and the problematic behavior returned.

I then removed just the TPDT key/value pair in the original file, saved, and restarted Sketuchup.

The the issue was again resolved.

Adding the key/value pair back to the file reproduced the issue again,

so at least for me that is definitely causing the problem.

I also noticed that when I regenerated the new JSON file that property was missing entirely,

so for whatever reason it was not generated as part of the baseline configuration.

Specifically, this is what I removed from the JSON file:

“TPDT”: {
“Data”: "78 120 10 7 44 67 0 41 78 89 16 71 57 2 88 104 12 86 107 112 4 108 106 64 122 15 65 99 85 82 84 1 117 26 116 "
},

Had the same problem with latest version of SU and MacOS, on an M1 Mac Mini.
I managed to resolve this problem by resizing the tag windows to its smallest size and enlarging it again (click and drag its corner). The Name column then reverted o its normal behaviour of widening o the available space. Not sure if it works for all and all the time, but it id the trick on my machine.
Hope this helps.

So if I open a new, blank drawing, the columns seem to work fine, then I can open any drawing I want.

If I open directly by double clicking from the Finder the tags are fixed (usually too small). Weird…

Colin,

Is the “SketchUp Team” working on a SketchUp bug fix update for this? I am just an architect user. I have lots of tags for each file and the names get long. I think the ultimate fix is to allow users to adjust the column width, Or have the column width adjust automatically to the size of the largest input.

I don’t have the time or interest or capability to create a work around, so I hope you will issue a bug fiux update.

Thank you.

The problem is being looked at, I don’t know when it will be fixed.

In another post I gave a simple work around, which is to not open files from the Welcome screen. That seems to be the only combination that leads to the name column issue.

This problem has been mentioned in several topics. It may take me some time to track down all of the posts. Now that I’ve found this one I can mention that the 2022.0.1 update from Thursday does fix the issue. The Mac disk image is here:

https://www.sketchup.com/sketchup/SketchUpPro-full-dmg

thats supR-cool.

THANK YOU! Was tearing my hair out.

Note that renaming that json file ended up not being important. It was by chance that after doing that the problem didn’t show next next.

I have been alerted to another really simple fix.

Detach the tag palette from any docking. Minimize the palette size by using the handle in the bottom right corner. Then expand it back out again. Voila!

problem is gone for me since SU 2022. Would still love to be able to resize the columns though, so that linestyles, or “dashes”, took less attention.

For future reference - the fix put forward by forum member “thibaut” worked for me also on SU2021-Pro under MacOS Catalina.

I opened a drawing with a TAG window having a name field that was too small and not resizable. Grabbed the corner of the TAG window and resized the whole window to a small as allowed, then grabbed and resized the same window out to be wider, with the benefit that the name field was now wider than before. Still can’t resize the individual TAG window name field, but it’s width adjusts to fit the total size of the TAG window, which solves the problem well enough.

NOTE - Before trying the TAG window resizing fix above, I did rename my Sketchup(menu) → Preferences → Files → Templates → [Folder Icon] => (new finder window) my-previous-custom-template-file (renamed to) old_my-previous-custom-template-file. Upon restarting SU, it seemed to have substituted the standard “Architectural” template in place of my-previous-custom-template-file I started using months ago after the earlier “Architectural” template.

This is a workable fix, with many thanks to “thibaut” on the Sketchup Forum
