Sudden severe stability issues

I have been using SU2024 since it was released with no issues. I am suddenly as of two days ago, finding that to even launch the software it takes several minutes. There is a couple minutes delay after double clicking the SU shortcut or an SU file before the screen even indicates that SU is opening. Then it takes a couple more minutes for the file to completely open. For large complex models I often open from a remote server, I am just getting error messages saying “Failed to Open Document”. I have never had this issue with any iteration of SU in the 10+ years I’ve used the software and at a loss for what to do. I have checked that my graphics cards are operating properly. I have cleaned up my OS. I have uninstalled and reinstalled SU. I have installed system updates. I have no idea what else to do. Help would be enormously appreciated.

SketchUp has not changed in months, so what changed on your set up?
I would look at firewall and anti-virus for a possible cause. Opening models from a remote site can cause file corruption. Best practice is to download the file to the desktop and open from there. When saving the file, save to the desktop and upload to the remote site. Trimbal Connect is a great place to store your files if possible. You can open and save them directly without extra steps.

Right. It’s so perplexing. I can’t think of anything that has changed. I’m running the same anti-virus as always. Tried disabling it to see if the SU issue improved but it made no difference. I recently installed Bluebeam Revu but other than that, nothing. I don’t know how that could be related but do you think it could be?
Even files saved to my computer are giving me the issues.

Sounds like system issues. One thing to try is running the Windows memory test. It might take some time, but at least the memory can be ruled out.

Thanks for the tip. I ran the memory test and everything looked good. I also completely removed my antivirus software and that made no impact. I installed SU 2023 to see if that works better and it does launch a bit faster but still on a pretty significant lag. 2024 is just dragging though and no other programs are showing and signs of weakness. So bizarre.

Where is the SketchUp file saved?

Makes no difference unfortunately. Just launching the application from my desktop or trying to open a file from dropbox all have the same lag time.

Any extensions installed?

FWIW, you shouldn’t work on files saved directly to DropBox or other cloud locations. That creates a huge risk of winding up with corrupted model files.

Try disabling Enscape. Then a cold reboot of your computer. Any difference in behavior?

BTW, are you keeping warm?

Is cold reboot when you hold the power button down until the computer shuts down suddenly?

(Sitting next to my space heater :grimacing:)

Well, it’s just a power off reboot. I would use the normal Power Off from the Start panel.

Space heater is a good idea. Light at the end of the tunnel, though. We’re supposed to be in the 40s this weekend and early next week. Might just be a tease, though.

I did that and nothing seems different. It took 1min 23sec for the sketchup2024 welcome screen to arrive after I launched the app from desktop. During that time there was no indication that I’d launched the software.
The good news is that I’ve been able to open files from the remote server of the office I’m consulting for. I’ve been accessing files through their server from their secure vpn for a couple of years with no issue until yesterday. Late this afternoon i’ve been able to open them without the “failed to open document” message. Once a file is open it seems to work smoothly. Although, since you mentioned enscape, some materials were flickering in an odd way today which I’ve never seen before.
It just weirds me out though that it takes so long for the app to launch still. I’ve never had this.

Hmmm…

I’m afraid I haven’t got much more for you. Keep in mind that SketchUp doesn’t officially support virtual environments. Previously there have been reports of issues related to virtual connections and graphics cards/drivers.

It is also not recommended to work on files saved remotely. There are many examples here in the forum of unrecoverable files which were saved to cloud or other remote locations. The advice is to download files to your internal drive before opening them . Save your work on the internal drive and sync back to the external location after you’re finished.

If you haven’t had any problems I’d say your luck has been good. Maybe oughta buy a lottery ticket.

I appreciate all your help. Yeah I’ve been working with these files remotely for a couple years and also running my own business off of dropbox for 3.5 years and have never had a corrupt file. Maybe I will get a lotto ticket.
I’ll also consider changing my ways. Thanks for the tip.

The clue for the slow launch time might be here. The startup screen has all those thumbnails for the files you have opened recently, and updating and verifying those might take some time if the files are not stored locally. Just a suggestion.

Did you install a lot of plugins lately.

These can increase the startup time.
