SU File doubled in size & Required saving in SU 2020

Hi all,

This is my first post here :slightly_smiling_face:

I had an issue last night where my files size went from about 90MB to now 177MB.

This is a large model, and basically the only difference was that I re-created 4 and 6 seat tables, and added material, made into a component, and then placed them in a dining area. There was no new 3D work created, and nothing spectacular that I can think of that would nearly double the size of the file.

Also, SU required that I save it in 2020, and I am currently using 2023.

No problems this AM, everything seemed to open fine. However, I did check the Model info tab and got this messages on the ‘fix problems’ tab:

FYI, Recent M-Arch grad, but this is my first full model in SU, so I am familiar with it, but don’t know the ins and outs yet. thinking of basecamp this year.

It would help us help you if you share the .skp file.

sketchup 2021+ files are about half the size of previous versions because they reworked the compression.

so yeah, your 2023 file was 90 and your 2020 is 177.

you mean, when you reopened your 2020 file in 23 ? did it show you a message saying something like “this is a 2020 file and if you save modifications you won’t be able to reopen in 2020 after that?”
it’s not a requirement, just a warning that by saving your 2020 file in 23, then it won’t reopen in 2020.

yes. it’s pretty normal when working with a file in an older version.
it’s a bit like translating. Take a text from 2023, translate it in 1800 english. and translate it in 2023 english again. there will be some bits here and there that require fixing.

share the model? not really comfortable doing that yet!

OK. As @ateliernab pointed out, savnig the file as version 2020 would and should result in a larger file. As for the rest of it, pretty much impossible to identify the exact problems.

I understand… is there anyway to identify the line or plane associated with the nCloop or CFace number?and does that message ever go away? I don’t eant to see error messages, even if they are fixed!

I don’t know that there is any way to identify those CLoops. I expect your model could be fixed permanently so the error doesn’t appear but no way to tell from what you’ve shared.

Thanks for your input. The model works fine. It still shows the problems in fix problems tab… it hasn’t gone away. but all in all the model still is functioning.
