SU 2024 crashes while exporting animation

No bugsplat - no nothing. It creates around 100 frames and then the entire SU application disappears.

What export settings did you use?
What video format was the output?
What are stats on the model?
How many animation scenes did the model have?
Do you have the graphics engine set to classic or new?

Hi, Dan.

Thanks for your quick response.

Export settings: Full HD 1080 resolution, 12-15 FPS, line scale multiplier 1.00, no loop to start.
Video output format: mp4
Model stats: I don’t know what all you need, but it is a 232MB file, with scene transitions set to 4 seconds with a 2 second delay at each scene. Another file (55MB) does OK with all the same settings.
The animation has 30 scenes (there are additional scenes not included in the animation).
Graphics engine is the new one. (

I’m going to try using the classic graphics engine and see what happens. I have no idea how this impacts the process.
FYI, I have exported animations of this model dozens of times over the past few months, but from a different (work) computer.

Thank you!

Hi again, Dan.

The classic graphics engine produces the video, but it’s missing ambient occlusion - which is one of the main things I need to see.

Reverting back to the new graphics engine, the process produces 97 frames (out of 1,036 I think) and then everything disappears.

And finally…

I set the multi-sample anti-aliasing to 0x and almost got output - 1,247 frames out of 1,346 instead of 97 frames as before, before it crashed.

Did you get a partial file? and if so, how big was it?

(There once was a bug in older versions where the output exceeded some size [6GB?] and the export would fail. One bug was that the file was written to the TEMP folder, but not afterward copied to the destination path.)

Rhetorical Musings:
So, estimating the MP4 file size at 24 bit color, I come up with a 16GB file size.
Does this sound about right?
Is there enough space on the drive?
Does Win 10 Home have any restrictions on memory per application process?
Does the export library used by SketchUp have memory limitations?

See:

The crash didn’t leave any video file behind that I know of. I’ve looked in the Temp folder on the C drive, but there’s nothing there but a bunch of text files.

I’ve exported dozens of mp4 files over the past few months (on my work computer - and the only versions are now on YouTube). As I remember, none are any bigger than around 300 MB, and I think that’s a high upper bound.

I don’t know about any Windows restrictions, but the amount of free space on the drive is more than 900 GB.

I also don’t know about SketchUp’s export library. I’m more ignorant of these things than one might think.

Thanks, Dan.

… is supposed to go in your forum profile where you’ve entered “I don’t know”.

Okay, my calc was uncompressed size. (The AI calcs about 107.2 MB for a 180 second video.)

Any crash report in the subfolders of "%ProgramData%/Microsoft/Windows/WER" when it crashes? (This may be a hidden folder. You might need to go into folder settings and check a box for “Show Hidden Files and Folders”.)

FYI, there are known issues with animation export from SU2024:

The SketchUp Dev team is working on it. If you contact customer support, they may ask for a copy of the model that crashes to test a fix in progress. (They would give you a secure Trimble email to send a file to.)

Hey, Dan. I’m working through your responses. Thank you 10^6 for sticking with me.

I see a number of crash reports in the ReportArchive folder. One of the “AppCrash_Sketchup” files includes the following in the WER file (which I tried to upload but can’t). Does this tell you anything?

I’ll look into that. Thank you!

This is part of the Universal C Runtime Library in Microsoft Windows. It provides essential functions and routines that are used by various applications and system components. This library is a core component of the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio, which means it’s used by applications built with Visual C++ (which includes SketchUp.)

Interestingly, I am now running Win 11 and the version of this library in my C:/Windows/System32 folder is 10.0.26100.1882 which would be a much newer version than what you have installed. (Also weirdly, SketchUp ships with a much older version of this library in both it’s Importers and Exporters subdirectories.)

What is the release of SketchUp that you have installed?
(Your forum profile does not indicate the release nor build.[ * ])

I would suggest to:
(a) Reboot machine if you have run SketchUp this session (clears out memory and SketchUp Webhelper service instances)
(b) install the latest release (if you have not yet,) or (if you have) redownload the latest and rerun the installer via:
right click > Run as administrator
then choose the Repair option
(c) Reboot machine afterward, then try the animation export again.

If it still crashes … I would explore the possibility that you need to uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable package.

Check your system installed Apps list to see what you have installed.
(I think it was called Programs and Features in Win 10.)

Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads | Microsoft Learn

My list shows I have version 14.38.33130 installed.

Hi, Dan, and thanks for another reply.

I’ll follow through on your suggestions.

Concerning the release and build of SU I’m using, I can’t find either the information itself, or where in my profile I would enter it. I downloaded and installed SU on January 12.

The build number is on the About dialog accessed from the Help menu.

Likely you have the latest release, which is 2024.0.2, but you can verify at the top of the Release Notes pages by comparing the build numbers.

Never mind about entering the build into the profile, they’ve just recently changed this so we can only make certain choices, which are more generic. (Previously it was a free-form text entry box, and I had several versions listed. Can no longer have a custom entry.)

BTW, another previously reported bug in animation export occurs when the camera changes type from one scene to the next. I.e., the animation works whilst the camera type remains the same, such as parallel projection, but crashes when it gets to a perspective scene.

Hey, Dan.

I see that the version of SketchUp I installed is 24.0.594 (64-bit). I don’t see where to access the Release Notes.

I have a couple emails from SU support. I’m about to work through those.

Thanks again for your help.

This sounds like it has potential. With my initial settings, there were 1346 images to be created, and the process always seemed to crash at number 97.
