Thanks Doug, It is getting more clear now. However I still try to figure out how to integrate the dashes pattern “behavior” of layer to the original usage of layers. I believe, it would have been better if dashes applied to edges (too?) and not to layers…
There are several forum posts related to this, so I hope it will be clarified more, after certain time.
This is the most “relevant” article in help, what I find: https://help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup/applying-dashed-lines-layers
…and I did not find the info about my questions what you just answered.
However it is not clearly describe e.g. if the dashes pattern should be applied to an individual edges within a component or to group contains the edges.
The inheritance is also not entirely clear, but it may be because English is not my mother language…
the originals were made using InterfaceBuilder, so the .nib wrapper is in fact a bundle/folder containing two flavours of XML, both with .nib extension…
keyedobjects.nib is a .plist and designable.nib which is a .xib…
if you adjust ‘both’ correctly, you can achieve the desired results and maybe even more…
using Xcode is just far easier to explore the original ‘options’ visually…
on some of SU’s key functionality is hardcoded in the controller and the ‘nib’ is just a generic shell…
Using “Default” is confusing (both here and for materials.) The word should be “Inherit” or “Inherited”.
“Default” in the rest of the software world indicates to users that there is a setting they can make to have objects take on their chosen property when created.
Or perhaps “Edge Stipple” for a column heading (as it’s not really a full style yet.)
I do not see this happening. If Edge style is set to “All same” and the Edge color set to “Black” then edges do not take on the Layer color. Ie, only the faces show in layer color. Or are you saying this changed in v2019 ?
You’re correct - it is possible to view black edges and faces by Layer. (i just confused myself playing with all the settings). Same applies in 2019 but there’s a new tickbox for “Dashes” under Style > Edge Settings
Piling on here. Just installed 2019 and holy hell is the “Dashes” column annoying.
The addition of dashed edges, as near as I can tell, was the major change to 2019, and the current UI is a step backward from 2018.
I use lots of layers constatantly. I also regularly change my active layer. As do the other 10+ daily licensed pro users at my organization.
Please please please update so that the Dashes column can be hidden, resized, or even better yet make it so that the columns can be re-ordered to user preference (I really want my active layer indicator to be over closer to layer name or visibility.)
Thank you.
PS Am I missing something or do we still have to size circles by radius, not diameter?
We put certain raw geometry on certain layers so that after exporting to autocad the file can be fed into a CNC machine. Each layer controlling the type of cut to be made.
“Raw geometry on layer zero ALWAYS” seems to be approaching religious dogma around here, but there are situations where that rule is broken to make the overall workflow much better.
That said, if there is another way to achieve what we do while keeping raw geo on layer zero I’m happy to learn!
Rather than chasing the active layer all the time, draw on layer 0 and assign a different layer to the relevant geometry via Entity info. Better yet, use groups for all the edges and assign them a layer, this way you can move them around, draw on them etc and not have them interact with other geometry, then before exporting explode all the groups and they will retain the layer value they have been assigned.
■■■■, just noticed this. I resize the Layers column to my preference, but then EVERY time I switch to a different scene it resizes itself! Updating the scene, saving, re-saving, etc. does not seem to affect this behavior at all.
The ability to independently resize all of the layer column widths is essential in OSX. The fixed ‘dashes’ width compromises screen real-estate and is ill-considered. Please address.
I also support being able to hide the dash column. I understand the longtime wish for the dashed lines, but it’s no use to me. Also The active layer column would be good to lose. Active layer could be shown by color or some other method.
Come to think of it hiding any column besides layer name would be great. (no sense to hide “visible” column either). I’ve found little use for color by layer.Who does? Whenever I have tried to use it for something it’s generally a fun waste of time. It’s a holdover from CAD where it actually is useful.
I use it often enough but not in a quick “on/off” way -more like I activate color by layer to do some Q/C at the end of my workflow. I’d be fine with it being default hidden, as long as there is a menu somewhere so that I can activate it when needed.
I’ve set the layer colors to match what is expected at Local Authority submission, so when doing those I have scenes that are “Color by Layer” whilst keeping my texturing as I want it.
