Some Extensions Failed to Load

For as long as I can remember, I have had the same issue very time I load sketchup. “Some Extensions Failed to Load”. Some work, many don’t.

The errors read: Failed to load file. (Failed to read RBE/RBS file.) This happens on 8 different extensions.

I’ve been on a 2 day journey into an abyss of Copilot and Gemini led dead ends.

What I’ve tried:

  • Clean uninstall reinstall
  • Complete Windows 11 Reset
  • System and Disk Checks
  • NTFS & File System Checks
  • Folder and Install behavior
  • Security Layer Checks
  • Integrity Streams
  • Reseting Programdata ACLs
  • Checked Controlled Folder Access
  • Checked Protection History
  • Downloading fresh installer
  • Installing Sketchup on a separate internal drive other than C

I am at my wits end. The only thing I haven’t tried is completely wiping my PC and starting fresh. I run a business and don’t have the luxury of time to do so.

What is the text of the error message when SketchUp opens? This is where troubleshooting starts. What are the 8 extensions that do not work? Did you install SketchUp correctly by right-clicking on the installer and choosing “run as administrator”? If not, do so and choose the repair option.

Don’t reply on AI until you’ve exhausted ‘sage advice’…

If it happens all of the time you can easily get the loading error messages - there’s a copy option in the dialog. Then paste that into a post here… There’s lots of useful stuff in the error reports - sometimes pointing to deprecated methods in older extensions v. newer SketchUp [fixed by making sure you have the latest versions of all extensions and supporting ‘lib’ files installed properly and a restart to sync] , other times it can be a permissions issue where settings are incorrect etc [errors with the su_… extensions are often an indicator of this]- @RLGL 's advice about first doing a Repair can often fix those settings after a restart…

Unfortunately your info so far is like you phoning the repair-shop about your car and saying, “it’s broken - how do I fix it ?” - help us to help you…

Thanks TIG…
This is the first message:

You must install LibFredo6 (v7.6 or higher) to run RoundCorner

But when I try to update Libfredo, it says it installs it but does nothing and repeats the same error after relaunch.

This is followed by the list of failed extensions:

How are you installing Libfredo6? In order to run RoundCorner you’ll need not only LibFredo6 but also the latest version of the Sketchucation ExtensionStore tool which manages the license for Fredo6’s extensions.

The current version of LibFredo6 is 15.9c.

Repair the installationof SketchUp as indicated and do a cold reboot, install the current version of the Sketchucation ExtensionStore (5.0.7) and use it to install LibFredo6 and others.

As for the other extensions install them fresh from the the Extension Warehouse if you still get the errors when you start SketchUp after the repair.

Following @DaveR 's excellent advice… those errors seem to relate to extensions across the board. They include several su_… named extensions, which ship with, or are by SketchUp - e.g. su_sandbox.rb.
This strongly suggests a bad security/permissions set up where files are either failing to be copied over properly, or read and loaded properly. It’s a SketchUp installation issue rather than something wrong with Windows… [Although you could have corrupted user-account causing issues ? more about that later…]
When SketchUp is installed from its exe file in Downloads it should be done by right-click > Run as administrator… If it’s already installed you will be offered a Repair option. This is not destructive and all of your installed extensions should stay safe. After a restart things should run better because all file, subfolder and folder permissions should now be set up properly.
You can check this by looking at the Plugins folder’s permissions -

C:/Users/Scott/AppData/Roaming/SketchUp/SketchUp 2026/SketchUp/Plugins
select its icon, right-click > context-menu > Properties > Security
Systems vary but the minimum I’d exp[etc is Scott (…, Administrators (… SYSTEM etc
In the lower pane they should have ‘FULL’ checked. You can Edit the settings, and in the new dialog set it like that if needed. Changes should ‘trickle down’ to include the same permissions to nested folders and files.
Occasionally permissions are skewed for files and folders in your …/AppData/Roaming/… tree outside of the Plugins realm - e.g. settings files remembered for preferences in …/Local/… folders or files - e.g. in …/Local/Temp/… If that’s the case we can talk you trough that too…

Thank you both so much for your help on this and your patience with me. Begore I get too deep into it, I tried running the repair function. Downloaded the Sketchucation Extension Store straight through the Extension manager as you said. But Unfortunately, it is doing the same thing as most of the others, which is that it shows up in the manager, is grayed out, and does not show up anywhere else so I am unable to use it. The only function I can control through Ex. Manager is “uninstall”.

I checked permissions on the plugins folder. Full Control is checked on my user profile, admin, and System.

A few other bits of info if its helpful:

  • The one extension that still works is Solid Inspector. It installed easily without error, and is listed at the bottom of the tools menu as well as the manager.
  • This is localized to one machine, my CLX desktop. My HP Envy laptop works like a charm.
  • I do remember coming across the corrupted user-account issue in my research. I am wondering if you are on to something there.

You must open the sketchucation store plugin, from there you must download fredo6 library and any other Fredo’s plugin, there’s also a gear button when you click on it it will show you the plugins that can updated. The native extension manager is not able to update all the plugins, just the ones that the developers allow it, fredo doesn’t sell any plugin on the sketchup’s extension warehouse, they’re available only through sketchucation as you were already told.

well, in fact, it’s one fredo plugin, and all the rest are SU ones. that’s odd.

The failure of su_… extensions to load is usually associated with permissions issues because typically SketchUp copies them over from Shipped-Extensions before loading them. So either they get copied over but have bad permissions to load, or they don’t copy properly ?
@sneale - in the SketchUp…AppDat…Plugins folder > Properties > Security pane what are the permissions for other users ? Administrators should also be ‘Full’, and these permissions should permeate down into all contents - subfolders and files…
Here’s a step-by-step to look and fix it…
Close SketchUp.
I’ll assume you’ve got to your users … AppData… SketchUp folder and have selected the Plugins folder’s icon.
Right-click > context-menu > Properties > Security > Advanced.
At the top of the window which opens the ‘Owner’ should be set to either your user-account, or if you are an administrator [IMHO] ‘Administrators’ - you can see the actual names + computer etc in the Properties>Security dialog. Pick ‘Change’ and reset it - type your user-name, check for matches and select the full-name as also shown on your Properties>Security dialog. Also check the box below that to change the owner of all contents.
Also check that ‘Full Control’ is set for each of the entries listed in the main pane…
Then press Apply and a progress dialog pops up and when that completes press OK…
Close the Properties dialog.
Restart SketchUp and see what happens …
Report all errors this time round…
Note that there should be several folders in the same folder as your main Plugins folder - like Materials, Styles etc - these should have similar Properties>Security settings…
