SKP file crashes

Hello,
What are the possible causes of a file crash when using the procedure, File > Export > 2D graphics to get a 2D photo? All the troubleshooting has been done, and no response from tech support

What exactly does that mean? What troubleshooting has been done?

When it crashes do you get Bug Splats? Have you been sending them in with your email address attached?

Share the SketchUp file so we can examine your file and see if we get the crashes, too.

Exactly, The troubleshooting I’ve done on my end, was to switch computers. And its not the computer or operating system because the problem is duplicated on both my computers. And the Specs are more than enough than the minimum requirements to run Sketchup. So there is plenty of computer power to support it. Yes, I’ve been getting “Bug splats”. And it only happens on two Skp files which carry about 220,000 Kb. But I’ve had no problem with other files that are larger. So it seems these two particular files that are crashing as soon as I press the export button > 2D graphics and after 3-5 minutes of buffering before it finally crashes. So it seems the files might be corrupted. But I have a lot of work on these two files, and hope to salavage them and not lose them. I tried copying and pasting the two problem Skp files but found it doesn’t help since the problem (if it is a corrupted file ) in the file carries over to the new copy–I tried opening the new copied skp file and does the same crashing. Its a landscape model. Can I upload the file over to be able to check it on your end, and try to open it? The file is large. But I think it has to be uploaded in another portal but not sure how. thanks a lot ! Appreciated

Upload the file to DropBox or We Transfer and share the link.

Thanks, I’ll try the Dropbox. I’ve used it before. I just need to figure it out, then to uploaded as soon as I can.

I tried copying the dropbox file , but not sure if it works. I was able to reach the dropbox site and upload the file.

I did my usual cleanup procedure on your file. Fixed incorrect tag usage,

purged unused stuff from the file,

and reduced the size of the excessively textures in the file. This resulted in more than 30% file size reduction.

I was also able to successfully export a png image from the file.

How large are the watermark images?

There’s no hurry. I’ll research a little more on the dropbox process. And might be the next day. Again no hurry on addressing this, but once I figure it out then should be able to transfer the file in the next day or two, Thanks again !.

Thanks so much! Thats great! Was the same process used, File > Export > 2D graphics for png picture? I know there are other options for screenshot images. But I’ve been using this File > Export > 2D graphics option for the last couple years with great success, up until now when the crashes started. So I know this graphics option is valid and good. Sorry, I’m not quite sure how to check how large the watermark images are

Why is your model more than 2 miles from the origin?

Yes. That’s the process I used for exporting the image from the model.

Don’t you have the images saved on your computer somewhere?

The file size is about 240,000 Kb. Is this what is meant by how large the watermark images are? Yes, all my sketchup models are saved and backed up on external HD in different locations, since there is about 5 years of work on my work project

How can the model be recentered to the axis /origin? I think the reason it is off center, is because I’ve done a lot of modifications with the same files over time.

The file size of what? There are four watermark images in the style.

I was asking about the images you used for the watermark.

As far as the external HD goes, make sure you are not opening the SketchUp file directly from the external drive and make sure you are not trying to export the image to the external drive.

You would have to select all of the geometry of the model and then use the Move tool to move it to the origin. It’ll be very slow going. Your model even after I cleaned it up has nearly 8 million edges and a crazy number of component instances as well as all those images and groups.

I’ve seen larger SketchUp files but yours is still obese.

This option of purging unused data, which is Window > Model > Statistics. I’ve used this many times in the past–but forgot about it this time. There was also another option I think, in the above cleanup option screenshot here “Default tag geometry” . Is this a 2nd tool for cleaning up the excess unused data in the default trey?

Yes. It’s an extension available from Sketchucation. If you were keeping up with proper modeling you wouldn’t need it but it makes quick work of fixing that when you have let your model get out of control.

Where the cleanup was done, what was the name of the extension / plugin under “Default tag geometry”? Can I download it from the extension warehouse instead of sketchucation? I already know about the 2nd tool, which was under window > model > statistics.
Can I remove my dropbox link to my file? I want to leave the rest of the advise info intact, just need to delete my skp file.

The extension is called Default Tag Geometry. No. You can only get it from Sketchucation. The author doesn’t share their extensions in the Extension Warehouse.

You can delete the link from your post and remove the file from Dropbox if you want.

thanks and thanks for the help of removing the excess data, now my models are working better.
