No problems right out of the box on one desktop and one laptop, but, on my most powerful computer (Windows 7, Intel i5, 8 gig ram, Nvidia Geforce GTX 275) it takes a timed five minutes for SU to open. Once it finally opens, it seems to stay open until I grab my mouse and try to execute a command. At that point, it freezes for another 4-5 minutes. At that point, another click in the program repeats the lengthy freeze, ad infinitum (apparently).
This behavior is the same on the Intel on-board graphics (which is what’s running it beautifully on the laptop with an i3 proc.) and with a couple of other video cards, both of which are also Nvidia Geforce boards (but, less powerful than the GTX 275).
I have also completely uninstalled SU a couple of time and reinstalled, to no avail.
This strange behavior has, thankfully, never happened to me in nearly fifty years of personal computing.
What version of SketchUp are you using?
And do you have any extensions installed? (Does it take just as long time if you temporarily disable extensions?)
Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in SketchUp?
Window > Preferences > OpenGL > deselect Use Hardware Acceleration > Close/Restart SketchUp
If that helps, then there’s an OpenGL support problem with the graphics hardware/driver.
Try updating the driver: Download The Latest Official GeForce Drivers
The latest driver isn’t always the best solution.
In some instances earlier drivers have been known to work better.
Ah, Geo, what you say sounds feasible and, no, I have not tried
those things. I will do as you suggest as soon as I get back to that
computer.
I updated the driver again yesterday, but, had never considered
trying an earlier one. I'll look for a driver that's at least a year
old (?).
Thanx for the suggestions, Geo.

deive manager gives you the capability to " roll back" your display driver; have you looked at a restore point; registry cleaner,;Open task manager , select performance tab, select resource monitor at bottom right then in the PID list for SU you can check memory, cpu and others. If you do a context click on a pid and select wait chain analysis you can see if some process is not finishing causing the delay; have you updated windows; virus scan. Are you using dual monitor and have you made sure the graphic’s card is used ref NVIDIA control panel in the control panel?
Just some thoughts:(
Well,l Geo, the time to open SU went from 5 minutes back to 14 after I disabled acceleration. HOWEVER, from that point on, SU functioned like a house on fire. I built simple solid stuff for an hour and had no problem. Unless something pops up later (during more complex operations), I may be home free on this computer as long as I leave the program loaded all the time.
Thanx for the several suggestions for possible actions to take. I will be taking a careful look at each one over the next weeks. Looks like lots of interesting ideas, mac7595.
@Sid - somehow you are sending the reply-to email to LinkedIn which then responds with invite messages creating noise in the forum. Please make sure you remove these forum emails from your email list and be careful when uploading your contact list to services like Linked In.
I’m leaving the messages for a couple of days so Sid can see what is happening. Then I’ll remove them.
Thomas, I have no idea what caused this and am very sorry for the confusion it has caused. I have absolutely no idea what to do to remedy it short of dropping my membership in the Sketchup forum and trying to sign up again. Not even sure I can accomplish that since I’ve never “resigned” from a forum before.
For that matter, I’m unclear as to what, exactly, is happening with this anomaly. Specific guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Have you used Linked In recently? It has a feature where you can upload your email contacts and it would then send out invitations. What email client do you use? Many email clients collect the emails you get emails from and send to automatically. I assume you are receiving email notifications from this forum?
Wow, Thomas, you are absolutely right about Linked In uploading all my Gmail contacts. I did not do this! Talk about invasive tactics! So, I deleted all my Gmail contacts from my Linked In account. That really sucks.
Is there a way to know that this took care of the problem, or, do we have to sit back and see what happens next?
I really do appreciate your pointing this out and helping me with some very good ideas for curing the problem.
No worries - LinkedIn is indeed rather aggressive like that. Though they are not alone, Facebook, G+ and Twitter also encourage you to upload your address book. LinkedIn is a bit more persistent though…
It’s probably ok now. (I’ll give you a poke if I see more )
hmm… @Sid - it’s happening again. Maybe it’s possible to ask LinkedIn support for help on removing the forum reply-email-addresses from their databases?
Thomas, I could find no way humanly possible to get through to those
people at Linked In, so, I simply cancelled my membership. I don’t trust
them!! If THAT doesn’t stop the nonsense, I don’t know what will. Keep
me posted regarding further LI crapola.
