I read that on latest mac v(15.5) , sketchup 2024, is not that great, also as this crashes happens too many times to keep calm, I come across an old post from Colin “you had run SketchUp from the disk image itself, and had not run it from Applications, It’s possible that you opened it from an icon in the Dock, and that may have been pointing to the disk image version. Open SketchUp from Applications, . Trust that one, and remove any other SketchUp 2021 icons from the Dock.”
We did add a fix to SketchUp several versions ago, so that if you did run it from the disk image it might be slow, but would work ok. For versions before we added that change, if you did run from the disk image macOS would mark the application as not trusted, and that led to issues.
I’m on macOS 15.5, and didn’t notice any particular issue so far.
I had someone in training a couple of month ago who was running SU from the disc image, his machine only had 16gb RAM, and at some point in the afternoon, running all day, it crashed. He sent the bugsplat, but I couldn’t give you a number ^^
When I saw him re-launch from the dmg, I assumed it had been a RAM problem ?
I don’t know why it is slow, perhaps running an app from an archive involves continual decompressing of data? There are times when it can get so slow that you think SketchUp has crashed. Or perhaps macOS adjusts the amount of memory being used, and it can’t do that with an app on a disk image?
Either way, running it from the internal drive is a good thing to do.
It might not be. If you command-click on the icon in the Dock, you’re taken to where the application really is. If it is inside Applications/SketchUp 2024, then that’s the same location as you show in the Finder window. If instead command-clicking on the icon mounts the disk image, and takes you into the folder on the disk image, then that is not a good thing. You would want to eject the disk image, and remove that copy of the icon from the Dock, so that you don’t accidentally use it in the future.
