Sketchup Pro "Not Responding"

Yes maybe for laptops and external screen, i did not mention that I am on a standard PC with 2 identical screens, and drivers up to date. First time it happens to me, but I learned one thing at least !

What if it is happening on my laptop? Wasn’t yesterday, keeps freezing today. I can’t even move the mouse without “not responding” poping up

What happened between yesterday when it worked and today when it won’t? How big is the SketchUp model file? Can you share it so we can take a look to see if there’s an issue with the model?

Is your laptop plugged in to AC power? Does this happen in a new file?

Thank you for the great guiding questions, they helped me un-fuzz my brain! I forgot I had tried to download a model from the 3D warehouse because it didn’t appear on screen, and then I got distracted and moved onto something else. I did zoom to extent and it is indeed there, so that may be the issue? My original model is not too large, The downloaded one is significantly more complex. I was trying to take a look at how they created their shrubs…original is 4913 kb new one (with download) is 28,186kb. Maybe it is just the sheer size of the file?

Same result if plugged into AC or on battery.
No other differences between today and yesterday.
System is updated, Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 display driver (also updated).
Thank you for any advice you may be able to offer, I am a relative novice at all this, and just stumbled upon this forum. You folks are QUICK!

Was it just positioned a long way from the rest of the model?

Complexity of the geometry more likely. When you download components from the 3D Warehouse you should always download them into a separate file to examine, clean, etc. before you add it to your project. Make sure it’s a suitable component.

If you do add components to your project and later delete them, make sure you purge unused from Model Info>Statistics so the components and the materials get removed.

Note that integrated graphics such as this have never been recommended for use with SketchUp. Since that’s what you have you should get in the habit of keeping a tight rein on your models to make sure they don’t get out of hand. Components like many of the plants available in the 3D Warehouse that have a lot of geometry can bring your graphics card to a screeching halt.

Sounds like you’re back up and running, anyway. Good luck.

Yes it had an offset origin.
Good to know about the models, as well as the graphic card - I’ll run it on my husband’s mapping (GIS) computer and see if the file responds better. Thanks again!

Might be time for you to upgrade.

Darn

So…thanks for mentioning the “open and clean” step.
I tried opening my model garden on the husband’s gaming computer and it was still freezing like mad despite using only about 1% of the available resources.

So my hardware was not the (only) limiting factor.

One of the shrubs I had downloaded from the warehouse had 596,000+ edges and 278,000+ faces. Seems the creator had compiled it out of pictures of individual petals. I deleted it, and the model is no longer freezing.

A good case for importing components from the 3D Warehouse into a separate file to check it for suitability before adding it to your project. There are a lot of really nice, highly detailed components out there that work well when they are the only thing in the model but projects like yours rarely ever consist of just one shrub component.
