Hello,
I’m a beginner user of SketchUp. I’m trying to figure out why the Paint Bucket tool isn’t working. Does anyone where I should start troubleshooting? Does the item need to be a component or group first, for it to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Share your .skp file so we can see what you are working with.
You don’t need to make a group or component to be able to apply materials but you must have faces to apply the materials to.
To help achieve your goals, some time spent at the SketchUp Campus and at the SketchUp - YouTube channel will be very worthwhile. Both sites are from the SketchUp team. On the YouTube channel, pay attention to the Square One Series. It covers the basics for each tool.

Thank you @DaveR I was simply trying to add color to the guardrails for these loft beds. I recently went to try again, and actually worked, but at the same time change the color on everything else besides the guardrail.
Thanks @RLGL Will definitely look into those soon. I’m currently going through the SketchUp fundamentals
When I opened your file the Face Style is set to Hidden Line so just black edges and white faces. Materials won’t show with Hidden Line.
Switching to Shaded or Shaded with Textures shows the colors.
Best practice in most cases is to apply the materials to the faces, not the groups or components. The center post component has had the orange color applied to it instead of the faces inside.
Where did you get this model? It uses an ancient style.
Ah, interesting. I see now, this is a good point for me to take it from and continue my understanding/learning. Thanks for pointing that out
Ha! Model is from me just messing around and learning. Ancient as in…?
The style of the viewport in your model was a default style on sketchup when it belonged to google.
Actually before it belonged to Google.
I use sketchup since 2009 so I don’t know how it was before that.
