I got this message when I was importing foreign objects that was in DWG format.

The term is actually almost correct AutoCad terminology ( a bit old, they are called proxies now ). They are leftovers from Xref’ed objects that have been created by an AutoCad add-on (like the HVAC design application MagiCad).
