My SketchUp model froze while saving, so I closed SketchUp and tried to recover the most recent file. I found the latest backup as an .skb file, renamed it to .skp, and copied it from my flash drive to my desktop.
The file size is about 19 MB, so it looks like the data is still there, but when I try to open it in SketchUp 2026, I get the error:
“failed to open document.”
Things I have already tried:
• Renaming the .skb backup to .skp
• Opening the file from inside SketchUp using File Open
• Importing it into a new SketchUp file
• Moving it from a flash drive to a local folder
• Renaming the file to something simpler
• Checking OneDrive sync issues and copying it locally
• Trying to open it with Open With SketchUp
The file still shows a normal size (19 MB), which makes me think the model data may still exist. I’m also using the Windows operating system.
Has anyone successfully recovered a SketchUp file that shows “failed to open document” after a crash during saving?
Any recovery methods would be greatly appreciated since the project deadline is very soon.
you could install Sublime Text, open it and drag your sketchup file in there. if it’s filled with 0 it’s dead.
yeah, no. it’s like saying “I bought this book, it’s 5cm thick, it must contain a lot of words”. in reality, it could be a book made of 5cm of white pages.
when windows saves a file, it starts by creating an empty shell with the right size filled with 0. then the data is actually moved in it. you could have a 1gb empty file.
The last 80% of your file is nothing but zeros. As @ateliernab guessed, your file is toast.
This implies you’ve been working witht the file saved to a flash drive. Is that correct? If so, that’s been shown to be problematic and is not recommended.
By the way, make sure when you are saving and working on SketchUp files that you are saving to the local, interna, drive. Not to One Drive and not to a flash drive. If you need to have a copy of the file in either of those locations, first save to the internal drive on your computer and then copy the successfully saved file to the other location.
