I have a file that appears to be corrupted, I use SketchUp Pro 2025. When I try to open it I get a message saying “Failed to open document”
I have tried everything but no success
I will attach the file below
Any help would be appreciated!
The last part of the file contains nothing but zeroes. There’s no way to recover it.
Where were you saving the file while working on it? Did you try renaming the .skb backup file to .skp and then open it? Is the SketchUp version you are using cr acked? Did you have a power interruption that affected your computer?
I was saving the file for the first time, so there are no .skb files
yes there was a power interruption
I was saving the file to my pc
You must have done a lot of work before trying to save. At this point I guess you’ll need to start again. This time save early and then save to both the internal drive and to Trimble Connect to create an additional backup.
If that’s a common occurrence in your area it would be worth looking into getting a UPS so your computer doesn’t just quit in the even of another power failure.
Hai i have the same problems, can u help me ?
Your file is about half empty. It probably cannot be recovered.
I have tried multiple ways to open this file. the data seems to be intact and up to date when i last modified. converting skb to skp didnt work. i tried extracting, even the dat file conversion didn work. the file is huge and im unable to upload it here though. @DaveR @Anssi @colin
can it be retrieved?
How could we tell since you haven’t shared the file. Upload it to a file sharing service like DropBox and at least give us a chance.
Did you have a power failure? Are you using a cr acked version of SketchUp 2021? Is there a .skb backup copy?
You are using a cr acked version of SketchUp?
Your file opens in SketchUp 2026. I see you’ve allowed it to get out of control, though.
I fixed incorrect tag usage:
All edges and faces should be created and remain untagged.
Purged unused:
You are hoarding a lot of unneeded stuff.
And I resized the huge texture files.
That makes the model easier to work with and reduce the file size by nearly 50%. There is more that can be done with it.
First you need to get a legal subscription for SketchUp. Using cr acked software is illegal and makes you a thief.
Hi, piggy-backing on this thread as I have a model ‘Failed to open’ also.
The .skb also fails after renaming it.
I don’t back up to Trimble Connect (but will do henceforth of course).
Here’s the file, thanks in advance for any help.
Rob.
I have no problem opening the file. You are using the 2025 version; there is no reason not to download and install the 2026 version. You do not have to remove the 2025 install; they are standalone programs.
Where have you been saving the file while you are working on it?
Your file also opened fine for me in SketchUp 2026. I did my standard cleanup procedure by fixing incorrect tag usage, a general cleaning with CleanUp3, and reducing the excessively large textures. 49% file size reduction.
Will this file open for you?
Hi @DaveR , that’s amazing, thanks so much.
I couldn’t open my original file with SU26 but your file worked fine. Hugely grateful.
Can I ask if you think the issue was the bloat in the file that you cleaned up? For future ref so I can keep my models in better order.
Thanks again, Rob.
It could be file bloat and your computer. Mine was able to handle it without any problem but maybe yours won’t.
Again, where were you saving the file while working on it?
Based on the graphics card you list it seems you might be working on some sort of tablet. Is that it? If so, it might be that your tablet just doesn’t have adequate memory for the large file size.
Thanks for your help, I couldn’t open it with SU26 but have been successful with a cleaned version from @DaveR .
Thanks massively for your help nonetheless.
Hiya, I’m working on Surface 7 laptop with windows 11. 32gb RAM, Snapdragon (R) X12core.
Saving to Google Drive as I have been for 10 years with no failures to date. However I’ll now be saving to TRimble Connect as well as locally as per your suggestions I’ve found on other threads.
Thanks, Rob.
That may be an issue, sketchup does not run natively on windows ARM devices, it’s emulated so the performance is not the same as it would be on a supported device and OS. For now sketchup for ARM is available only for macOS.
You should buy a lottery ticket.
Good luck going forward. Spend some time learning how to keep your models streamlined. That’ll help.
