Sketchup crashing on windows

Opening sketchup 2025 on windows is a lottery, it works 1 out of 15 tries, I’ve done everything that has been suggested by support, updating drivers, use older drivers, clean the temp files folder, jump on one leg with my eyes closed while singing dancing queen… on Mac I’ve uninstalled sketchup 2024 because 2025 works perfectly fine, but on windows I must use sketchup 2024 95% of the time. It doesn’t matter how an skp file is open, either from a file in a folder, a file on the welcome page or an empty file, it doesn’t even leave a bugsplat after crashing. Am I the only one experiencing this?

It’s stable for me. I do have Scan Essentials installed and I don’t have V-Ray installed. As a ‘power-user’, did you tweak Nvidia in a way that could be affecting your SU '25 install? Are there (Nvidia) settings for V-Ray that could be cleaned up? I mention Nvidia because you use the Studio drivers… is there some other system tweak you’re doing?

I noticed that when I installed SU '25 from SU '24 ‘check for update’ that something in the system hung (I forgot what it was, but it was probably SU related). So, two options, update from ‘Check for updates’ or using the installer. Either way, keep an eye on the Task Manager for clues… hope you get it sorted.

I try to mess the less as possible with settings on windows, it’s not an OS I feel comfortable with, when I update the drivers I get a window saying if I want a default install or a custom install, I always choose the default one. I’ve uninstalled and installed sketchup 2025 like three times, one from sketchup 2024 and two just by downloading the files in my sketchup product manager, I installed a Vray update as well but it still is a lottery when I can open the software. I appreciate the help from the forum members but I expect to get a reply from an sketchup team member that at least tell me a fix is on it’s way.

Frustrating. I’m just spit-balling… I haven’t updated my drivers since before SU '25 (original release & update). Try older drivers?

same, I forgot to, then I read that some people had misfortunes with the newer drivers.

I get a crash on startup maybe once or twice a week during training sessions, but I’m usually running affinity photo, several instances of teamviewer, firefox, and several instances of SU at the same time, so an extra instance crashing is not really surprising.

2025 is quite stable for me. I have had some startup crashes apparently on the days it should be forcing me to re-login to SketchUp.
Have you sent in the bugsplats? Have you checked your extensions?

Just looking around… In Task Manager at least a few instances of sketchup_webhelper.exe are running and NVIDIA helper. I opened GForce Experience and was prompted to update to 318.0.417 (shucks, I think it was that number). Anyway, I must a have an older version of GForce installed since I haven’t used that in a while either. That’s just to say my system probably wasn’t up to date on Nvidia / GForce ‘stuff’ when I installed SU '25. I was prompted to shut down SU when installing… the installer either failed or continued to hang. I probably restarted to clear out whatever was running in background.

Maybe Francisco, you should release your activations, - including for the Mac- before trying a clean install on a fresh reboot?

Or, maybe you have a firewall that’s blocking Bing?

Change the language of the installer?

Deselect options for install (Revit, SE for Layout???).

Again, just brainstorming…

Sorry Franciso, not seeing this on my install of 2025. So far crash free. 2025 seems pretty stable.
v 25.0.571 here.
Edit: Duh, RTX 3080 v 546.33

Thanks, I’ve tried most of those things, I use just windows defender, imo is more than enough if you’re not downloading cracked software or visiting suspicious websites. I checked and it’s not blocking Bing, it would be ironic if it was. I’ll just wait for the next update and if it still doesn’t work I will delete everything and make a fresh windows install, I have an overkill 2TB 4th gen SSD where I have the OS and softwares and a 4TB 3rd gen SSD for all the files, I have just Sketchup, Draftsight, QCad pro, Twinmotion and office installed, it won’t take a lot of time to reinstall those softwares. Until then I’ll use 2024 on windows, I don’t really use all the new features, I have VRay and enscape licenses for rendering.

In the past I’ve added a fast (smaller) SSD, ran software off it, and then used the (larger/factory) HD for storage. Did you add one of the SSDs and reinstall the OS to it? If so, did you use the same/typical drive naming conventions? It sounds like you may have SU installed on a different drive than the OS? If so, have you installed SU on the same drive as the OS? If on the same drive, is the drive partitioned? Just thinking out loud… No fun to not be able to play with the shiny new toy… even if you can do without it.

I have all the software installed on the same SSD where I have the OS installed cause it’s the faster one, on the secondary SSD I have just documents, I haven’t partitioned any ssd as well.

Thanks for all your help, this is very strange, hopefully it will be solved with the next update.
