Sketchup crashes after applying one material

Hi,

I am experiencing a persistent crashing issue with SketchUp. The program crashes every time I hover over the materials tray after applying the first material to my model.

I’ve noticed this only occurs when I’m working on my second monitor at home; it does not happen when using the second monitor at my office. I have already taken the following troubleshooting steps:

* Checked for updated NVIDIA drivers.

* Uninstalled SketchUp extensions.

* Reinstalled monitor drivers.

* Repaired the SketchUp installation.

Despite these efforts, the problem continues. I have sent bugsplat reports each time the crash has occurred.

Could you please advise on how to resolve this issue?

Thanks,

Andres

Thanks for sending in 13 bugsplats.

All of them are related to making thumbnails. Can I try any of your models that you were working on when a crash happened?

We have done some thumbnail related fixes recently, hopefully I will be able to see the problem in the current version of SketchUp, and also whether we have the problem fixed in the next update.

Hi Colin,

Thank you for your response.

I’ve been adjusting the NVIDIA configuration and I believe the problem is related to my second monitor having a higher resolution than my laptop’s. When I match the resolutions of both monitors, the issue seems to disappear, and I can continue applying materials and working without a problem.

However, I would prefer to use the native resolution on my second monitor. I’ve attached a file with some basic blocks, as the problem persists even with the most basic models.

Thank you again for reaching out, and I hope there’s a solution to this.

Best,

Andres

I have setup my laptop to be 1920x1080 125% for the internal screen, and 3840x2160 150% for the external screen. With your file, what actions lead to a crash for you?

With SketchUp displayed on the external monitor. When I apply a material and then hover over the material tray to select a different one, SketchUp immediately crashes. This crash does not occur when SketchUp is running on the laptop’s built-in screen.

Is the Materials tray set to In Model, or some other set of materials? Your model only had the default material and a marble one. Do you apply the marble one then hover over the default material?

Are you running the new graphics engine? Have you tried switching to the Classic engine?

How is the external monitor connected to your laptop? If it is through a “dock”, have you tried connecting it directly? Some, especially older docks only support integrated graphics.

Yes, it happens with any of the materials.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. I already tried switching graphic engines. And the monitor is connected through HDMI cable

Is High Dynamic Range on or off ? (Some displays and some ports do not support it. But I was hoping Win 11 was smarter than Win 10 and would only allow it on if supported.)

BTW, I’ve found that SketchUp with Qt works best on the primary display.
So I changed my external UHD display to be the system primary display and I have fewer issues.

I could not replicate this albeit my secondary monitor is far smaller in resolution. It does have an also smaller font ratio (125 secondary to 150 on main). I’ve also tried pulling the tray off the viewport and putting only it on my primary monitor while viewport remained on 2nd monitor and tried all sort of changing materials and applying to a grouped cube and/or individual faces on that cube. Nothing for me made it crash. Tested on new graphics engine.

Thank you all for your help with this issue.

I believe Dan’s suggestion has resolved the problem.

First I discovered that the issue occurred when the Default Tray with the Materials section was set to auto-hide. When auto-hide is disabled, the problem seems to disappear.

Dan, I checked my monitor’s HDR setting and it appears HDR is not supported.

Finally, when I set my external monitor as the primary display, the crash stopped occurring, even with the Default Tray set to auto-hide. I’m not sure why this resolved the issue, but I’m glad to be able to get back to work.

Thank you all so much!

Best regards,

Andres

In my attempt to see the problem I did have the 4k monitor as the second screen.

I wonder if it needs to be a 5k monitor, there have been issues that seemed to not affect 4k but did affect 5k. I may try that next.
