SketchUp App is crashing whenever the students are doing their work

Hello,

In my classroom, the students use their Chromebooks and I notice whenever they have too many objects in their work, it crashes and loses their save. However, some students have the option in their settings where they can resort to the Classic Engine in the settings instead of the new one. My issue is that some students have that option and others don’t. This also happens on the desktop whenever we go to SketchUp/App.

Any help?

Thanks,

Hudson

Hey Hudson. Thanks for your post. I imagine it’s pretty frustrating having different experiences for your students.

We have launched a new graphics engine to a portion of folks which also enables some new visualization features (like Ambient Occlusion, Environments, and Photoreal Materials). It sounds like some of your students were included in the “rollout” and others were not.

If you haven’t done so already, you may consider applying for the SketchUp for Schools program, which will offer a more consistent experience for your students as well as access to all kinds of cool curriculum materials.

For now, it’s recommended that folks with a Chromebook use the classic graphics engine.

Hey Tommy,

I would use the Classic Engine on the Chromebooks, but that is not showing on some of the student’s profile. Is there a way for that option to show up?

Thanks,

Hudson

Ah! Great question. If there’s no “Graphics” tab in app settings and an option to “Use classic graphics engine,” then that student’s profile is automatically using the classic graphics engine by default.
