I guess this is as official as celebratory launches go this year? I suppose it’s time to share everywhere then, right? Was there an “official” release post by SketchUp that I missed? Or… is leaking method the way the news breaks?

no, not yet

well it’s not a leak, because it’s already public. no formal announcement yet, but it’s on the official website and all.
Beyond this forum, I haven’t seen the news hit the facebook groups I’m in, nor the “sketchup influencers” acocunts.

I’d tell you I expect an official thread soon-ish, but remember 23.1 there was none on the forum.

so wait and see

This is about as “casually” dressed an announcement as a fat guy in his bathrobe at a formal black tie event, feeling at home in the groom’s seat and not caring if the wedding guests whisper, “REALLY?!” !

I know there was a similar release method last year but, I thought it was a hiccup… not the new modus operandi.

The installer pointed me to the download. I did that and there was no option for 2024. So I went to Chaos directly as Ive had to do before and no 2024 download. So I opened a support ticket with them. Im waiting to hear back.

I want to take a moment to compliment the Sketchup / Layout team on this update. Looking through the release notes it looked like they addressed many needed things. After playing around a little its looking like a winner!!!

Love the analogy Duane, a good laugh for sure. Just to share a bit, ya, we are intentionally creating some separation between releasing the update, and some of the surrounding marketing. You should see the website, documentation, etc… updated, but launching all things, everywhere, all at once… was a bit of a black hole everything bagel to manage, and, some of us argued it was unnecessary as well.

I don’t actually know the full launch schedule, but woohoo, 2024 is out and for realz!!!

I haven’t downloaded yet the new version, but I read already the release notes. I couldn’t find any information of the new graphics engine, just that it’s a new one that takes advantage of modern hardware and software. Does anyone know the name or is it an engine developed by Trimble?

It is a new engine that layers over DirectX and Metal. No more OpenGL. I believe the sketchup team developed it themselves.

As of an hour ago, it’s official! Whoot, whoot!
And Tyson, love your new vid on AO. Good stuff.
How I am sharing in the Facebook and Linkedin SketchUp Groups:

“Today is the official release of Trimble SketchUp 2024!
Some great additions, features and tools.
The SketchUp 2024.0 update is available!”

Wow, I just found out accidentally! Was looking for SketchUp 2022 for my Enscape trial. Wondering if they’re coming with an update to fit to the new SketchUp version.

Still no Outliner control or section cut control at the Sketchup panel in Layout.

For once I found out about the new version myself rather than days later with an email from an extension developer! I thought the Sandbox Tools and Trimble connect needing updates was suspicious and I was correct!

This actually looks like a really worthwhile upgrade. Really nice to see they added USD import/export as this was a suggestion on the wish list… It is also great news to have a new graphics engine, as lots of architectural scenes for me these days become rather slow. Hopefully that will speed things up. It also means I will have to wait for all my extensions to be updated too by the sound of it! Worth the wait though in this case.

I haven’t had a chance to download the new version, but I really hope that alongside the new graphics engine, they have implemented a dark mode UI option…

nope.

nor have they reworked the mac UI into QT yet, meaning the interface work isn’t done yet. who knows, maybe 24.1 like the icons last year, or all the way up to 25 (I hope not 26. please, not 26  )
I figure a new engine to replace openGL (obsolete since 17) + switch to a more recent ruby was more urgent.

don’t wait to install / check it, many of them were already made using ruby 3.2 , many have been updated prior (Fredo and Curic announced their whole catalogue is already ready), you might already have a full house. and if not, at least you’ll know what dev/companies to contact

It doesn’t work with new Sonoma, when you model something, there are ,pauses" when you cannot use push/pull, colours or any shape with ,magnetic" points. Also there are too many crashes and it’s really annoying when you need to work. Models have some shades and if you turn around the space, it’s flickering. So looking for new update and hoping that it will work someday.

Which version of Sonoma? The latest one fixed some Apple bugs that affected SketchUp but maybe some remain?

Good news to hear of the engine improvements. I’ve been wondering if this was a long term goal of Sketchup’s to get something like this off the ground. …

I appears I have exceeded my allowed activation for my singular PC use/ownership thing. Does this mean I have to just sign out of SU23 then load up SU24 and activate? Will it cause any other issues?
I’m in the middle of a project and can’t afford to have any login errors crashing SU and stopping me from getting on with it.
Cheers
