Well, from my meagre understanding, there are two things that slow SU terribly, that’s edge-count and then huge textures.
Some models from the warehouse have HUGE counts of both & it can become a nightmare.
Oftentimes I import a model from the WH into a blank file & do a quick clean-up before buzzing it into my “real” model.
Does that answer the question, or maybe I’ve totally missed the point ?
Sorry, sketchup 2024 can’t solve simple geometric problems, ■■■■ it, after updates it crashes while modeling a small project that I’m testing using parametric geometry, I’m shocked that it can’t solve this problem, year after year Blender Rhino solves this problem, and my favorite software is SketchUp can’t solve
Perhaps if you shared the “problem” you would receive help in solving it. Are you using SketchUp free in a web browser. Start a fresh thread describing your situation and sharing the model. Perhaps the real problem is in the FFD extension?
I opened this small project over and over again did not use the FFD plugin and I assure you that it is also not stable
here is a simple geometry, I want to remove the excess inside the geometry and it crashes 10 times already
Upload the .skp file. It does not look so complicated.
Yeah my model file went from 36mb to 1.7mb
It made every component become its own individual component where i had it setup that with duplicates so if i changed 1 portal frame it changed them all for example.
I have recently had meetings with Tekla experts from 5 different companies.
No 1 takes their models as far as i do haha…
Ive opened pandoras box though because im now training others on how to do it.
@MBA Good ! It’d be good to organize a video call to chat about our different workflows !
I’ve just spent the morning exchanging with two different contractors whose ifc’s are also super detailed;
what comfort after years of manipulating 2d construction plans !
It’s all about better anticipation for better building… ![]()
That’s really interesting.
So importing your 2023 components in to a fresh 2024 document was slow?
I concur that the program seems of late to be crashing far more, often for seemingly no reason which in it’s self is different. Whereas in the past it mostly was some buggy thing with an extension, recently it appears simply to expire when it gets bogged down.
The fear of loosing my work has caused me to develop the habit of saving my work every few minutes, which when the file becomes large disrupts my work flow.
SU’s inabiity to handle the two opposite end issues of large file size and small segment size, have always been a source of frustration. The increased incidence of crashing is adding to that frustration.
I have an issue with sketchup 2024, when i am in xray mode it becomes very sluggish…any work around for this . I have a legion 7 pro laptop with rtx 3080ti nvme storage 4 tb. My other pc is an AMD Threadripper with rtx 2080 …both has the same issue
While some Bolts can run very fast, most bolts will slow the model down, as with the original poster.
X-ray is a high intensive graphic setting.
Do you have any bolts in your model?
Probably best to share the model, or start a new thread.
Thank you Mike unfortunately i am unable to share the 3d model since its
But that is what it looks like and it doesn’t have any internal nuts or bolts its all simplified beams.
Yes you are correct i think i will have to start a post on its own.
It looks simple enough but are the beams, doors etc. simplified enough? Having the rounded edges of beams, RHS tubes and door profiles modeled multiplies the face and edge count while adding nothing to the information content of the model.
Segal building? When I was young there were several firms that made these kinds of “open” panel systems.
Yes this is like a modular structure with beams and hard panels, almost like a lego. Due to the time constraints i had to keep some details and client doesn’t want to over simplify it. Internally its all h beams but simplified. I work in a temporary structures field. I also use 3dsmax for rendering as well. If i import this into rhino it runs so well. I am almost really happy with the way that SketchUp works now. I think its a given that i have to control details. I wish the devs would find some way to handle heavy details as well, since they are making improvements to the graphic engine. I do have a pretty decent setup. Thank you Anssi
