SketchUp 2023 Crashing with Styles Editing

Have you considered running a memory test on the PC?

Hmm…I did not try this as I’ve not experienced issues with any other apps. I ran the WIndows memory diagnostic tool just now and it does not report any errors.

It is a good idea to reboot the computer after an application crash, especially if BugSplat does not catch it.
Clear out all memory and “begin again with fresh slate”.

yes and no. sometimes when sketchup would open, it would appear like it was ready to get to work and i would either try to orbit, zoom or click a tab and splat. blank projects are not an issue. i thought it was a style or component so i did multiple drill downs looking for specific troubelsome things. i copied the entire contents of a file into a new blank model and began layering and scenes all over again. eventually after about three scenes - splat.
I turned off everything except what i needed in the scenes. i played with animation and delay as well to see if it would help. all it did was make me spend hours reopening after multiple crashes. I do suspect sometimes that it might be an extension. so i disabled all the toolbars and extensions that load automatically and it made no diffrence. one theory i did not get to prove however was the fact that i could use scene search more successfully than tabs. in anycase two behaviours that happened were 1. click a scene and SU crash immediately or 2. click a scene, it loads looks great, but the moment you click to make the next move it crashes.

i like this idea . but restarting continuously after bug splats doesnt save time esp when you have a deadline and SU wont cooperate. - finally had to copy stuff into a sceneless file to edit and then copy back to render.

to prove if the memory is damaged?

Sometimes bad memory can cause strange issues. If it has been checked and passed, it can be ruled out as a cause.

Thanks for the details.

I have another report that included some details, I will spend today trying to find the right steps for the crash to happen on my PC.

Ok just in the past 2 days I’ve had 7 crashes associated with scene changes. I haven’t doen anything different that I know of but the bugsplats are back! Here are the last 5. I am hoping someone from sketchup can resolve this as it is ongoing and frustrating.

Thanks for the seven bugsplats you sent in yesterday. They don’t have a description, for those ones, what were you doing at the time of the crash?

Hi Colin,
When these bugsplats occurred, my actions were pretty much identical to those I described when I started this thread. The common theme each time is that it always seems to include the editing or saving of a style, then the selection of a different scene tab at the top of the screen.
The editing of the style can either be in the Style Tray, or by selecting Update Style when saving a scene. It is when I do either of these and then select a different scene tab that the crash occurs.
I have experienced the crash to be intermittent. It seems that selecting some scenes will cause a crash and others won’t.
Also, I don’t think I’ve yet to experience the crash when selecting the scene from the Scene Tray. I think it has always been when using the scene tab at the top of the screen.
I have attached here a screen video showing how I replicate the bugsplat.

Mark

Thanks, I will try doing the same steps.

Have you noticed any connection between the scenes that crash and the ones that don’t? In particular, is there a difference in the scenes for whether they are included in the animation?

Hi Colin,
In this model there are no scenes included in the animation.
I did however try various tests such as progressively deleting certain complex entities to see if it was being caused by some inserted component. This does not appear to be the case.
I have discovered one interesting clue though. When I update a scene then change to another scene I get a crash. But if I click save in between changing scenes, it does not crash.
So:
update scene tab > change scene tab = crash
update scene tab > save > change scene tab = no crash

I then tested this in a new blank model file with just 2 scenes and was able to repeat the error. Note that this “blank” file was opened using my custom drawing template.

I then tried it with a new file using a standard sketchup template and there was no crash.

This leads me to believe it might be something to do with using my custom template.

Mark

Could I try your template?

When you update the scene, and then get a crash going to the other scene, what had been changed that needed the scene to be updated? Does it crash even if you have made no changes, and only chosen to update the scene anyway?

Hi Colin,
Here is the file I use for my template. I just tested it and it crashes using the method I described.

With the scene update I have tested a number of changes such as shadows and tags and they all cause the crash so I am not sure it is caused by a particular type of change.

Thanks for the template. It only has one scene, so I can’t follow the steps you gave. Should there be a first step to make a second scene? When you change the style and update the scene, do you let it make a new style, or update the current style?

Hi Colin,
Here’s a short video of how I replicate the bugsplat.

  1. add a 2nd scene
  2. draw something (say a rectangle)
  3. update the 2nd scene
  4. select the 1st scene - then crash

Do you see the bugsplat when you add a scene via the Scenes panel?

component

There is a difference, the eye position changes for the first scene:

Aha… i have had that problem with complex models when working via the scene tabs directly but after choosing to work using scenes manager i did not experience my crashing problem.

Not sure if thats any help.

I tried reproducing your setup, including hiding the default tray, and installing Vray. Still no crash.

What are the other extensions that are to the right of the View icons? And th ones to the right of Extension Manager in the second row?
