I cannot get SketchUp, Layout or Stylemaker to open no matter what I do. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, run as administrator, gone back a version in Windows, gone forward with Windows, updated all drivers, C++, everything. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong, or what else I can do to get SU back up and running. No error messages, no bugsplat, nothing.
Running Windows 10 Home Insider Preview.
Just to confirm, when you say “run as administrator “ you mean right-click the installer (not SketchUp) and choose that from the menu? If not, do so and choose “repair” from the options.
If that’s already what you did, please provide more information about what happens. Does it look like it is going to start but then not appear? Or is there no reaction at all when you try?
yes - I’ve run the installer as admin - both as a repair and as a new install.
When trying to open SU - I get nothing. A spinning (thinking) cursor for about 2-3 seconds, then nothing.
Layout will come up with the splash page, then nothing.
This sounds like a graphics driver issue. You might try updating the graphics drivers. Go directly to the manufacturer’s site to get the drivers.
The spinning cursor indicates it is trying to start and then hits some fatal error. The lack of a BigSplat suggests that either windows or SketchUp is aborting the app. I’ll have to defer to the windows gurus to tell you what to try or examine next, though my first notion would be a problem with the graphics.
I’ve updated the graphics driver directly from AMD.
I was just doing some looking at various benchmark sites. The graphics card you list is a fairly low performing card. Here’s one of them: UserBenchmark: AMD Radeon HD 7570
SketchUp and LayOut need an adequate GPU to run correctly. Do you have access to a different computer that you could try running SketchUp on?
It is an old machine, but I’ve had it running on this computer before. Time for a graphics card upgrade?
You’ve had SketchUp 2020 running on it before? Or an older version of SketchUp?
Well, based on what I see on the benchmark sites, I would personally be replacing it.
It seems most users have the best results with Nvidia GeForce and GTX series GPUs. You might see what you can get in that line that will work in your computer.
I’ve had 2020 running on this machine before. About a month ago it simply stopped and that’s when I fell down the rabbit hole of uninstalling/reinstalling everything, updating everything, scanning everything, all to no avail.
So that’s new information. What changed between the time it worked and when it stopped working. Most likely something to do with a Windows update or maybe an update for AV software if you have it.
My guess is a Windows update but I’m not 100% sure of that. I did use the option to go back to the previous build of Windows 10 to see if that made a difference. It did not.
Hmmmm…
Maybe it’s time for a new tool.
I was afraid of that…
Look on the bright side. A shiny new clean computer to move into.
For the times that LayOut opens, does it give you a blank welcome screen, or can you open an existing LayOut document, or start a new document?
LayOut won’t open. When I try to open it, I get the splash screen for about 10 seconds and that it. After that, the splash screen disappears, and then… nothing.
Is there any difference with either program, if you open an existing document instead of the application?
No. Trying to open an existing document gives me the same results - at least with SU. I don’t have an existing LayOut doc to try.
