Sketchup 2017 started crashing Windows on file close

Hi,
So far I haven’t found anyone with similar problem to mine.

I am using Sketchup 2017 with V-ray 3.6 on latest Windows 11.
About 2 months ago I started having problems - CLOSING a Sketchup project causes the entire system crash - it freezes instantly. A few times ending a process instead of normally closing the app saved my from having to reboot the system, but there was a time when even this didn’t help.

It’s not happening with fresh, empty projects, just a little more advanced, but I cannot see any rule, as the 3 projects that caused it were entirely different.

I will be mega grateful for any advice as it’s ruining my work at the momment.

Are you using SketchUp 2017 Make or 2017 Pro? If Pro, is it cracked?

You may be running into graphics driver issues. Updating the graphics drivers might help.

Please complete and update your forum profile.

Keep in mind there is no official support for SketchUp 2017.

Also, SketchUp 2017 hasn’t changed in 7 years, so it must be something else…

I am using Sketchup Pro, legit one  I am aware there’s no support anymore.

Thanks for the advice with the graphic drivers, I will check on this.

Whatever it may be I’m looking for a solution, if there’s any. :grimacing:

Could be a windows update. Windows is notorious for placing faulty graphics drivers, so @DaveR suggestion to look for an update on the graphics card manufacturors site is legit.

Edit: I use SketchUp make 2017 on Windows11 and have no problems. But I have auto-install for windows updates turned off so I can choose which updates I want. I ignore graphics updates…

Windows 11 was not released until OCTOBER of 2021. It is unlikely that any SketchUp 2017 version was even tested with Windows 11, which is not supported until SketchUp 2022.0.

I still have SU 2017 Pro installed but it began crashing for me (after a few minutes of doing nothing) when this machine was still running Windows 10. I’ve since upgraded to Windows 11. I’ll likely uninstall 2017 soon as there is no more point in it taking up space on my SSHD.

A solution might be to run a dual boot system and boot into Windows 7 or 8 to run SU 2017.

Another idea might be to set the SketchUp 2017 icon to run it in compatibility mode.
Right-click the icon, choose Properties. Switch to the Compatibility tab.
Choose to run in Windows 8 mode.

I’ve used Sketchup 2017 for years and it worked fine (or at least not worse than before, as it had never been perfect ) on Windows 10, as well as 11 until 3 months ago.

Thanks for all the replies - I will take all advice into consideration.

Yea, my problems could also have been a Windows update.

So what’s your graphic driver at the moment? From what I see your card may be the same as mine.

My driver version is 556.13
The newest newest version is 566.14

Opt for the studio driver instead of the game ready driver.
They seem more stable and are better suited for SketchUp.
Edit: I see no reason why you would use my version over the new one. It should work…
