After updating to SketchUp/LayOut Version 26.2.243, LayOut has become extremely slow, even with very lightweight models.
For example, simply stretching a viewport in one direction takes 40–60 seconds. If I resize two or more sides before the update finishes, the scale breaks, even though Preserve Scale is enabled. In previous versions, resizing was almost instantaneous.
The same happens with Tags. Every time I enable or disable a tag, I have to wait from several seconds to a few minutes for the model to update.
It feels like SketchUp and LayOut use two completely different workflows. SketchUp is fast and responsive, while LayOut pauses after almost every action to regenerate the model. Instead of working, I’m constantly waiting for updates to finish.
A task that used to take me about 30 minutes now takes over an hour, simply because of the waiting.
Has anyone else experienced this after updating to 26.2.243? Is this a known issue or is there a workaround?
My SketchUp file contains only one 3D model, but my LayOut document includes many plans, sections, and elevations created from that same model.
When I update the SketchUp model in LayOut, it starts updating every viewport one by one. I have to wait until each viewport finishes updating, even though they all reference the same SketchUp model.
For comparison, I opened the exact same SketchUp model and LayOut document on another laptop running an older version of LayOut.
LayOut 26.1.189 updates the document in about 37 seconds.
LayOut 26.2.243 takes approximately 5 minutes to update the same document.
The laptops have similar specifications, so the hardware difference is unlikely to explain such a dramatic increase in update time.
Is this the expected behavior in the new version, or is it a regression introduced in 26.2.243?
I also have one more question. Are there any SketchUp staff members or technical support representatives active on this forum who respond to issues like this?
Unfortunately, my organization’s license doesn’t allow me to contact SketchUp Support directly, so this forum is the only place where I can ask for help with this problem.
you’re using sketchup 26, meanig that you have a subscription, meaning that you can contact support directly.
it’s not updating the 3d reference that takes time. it’s updating the view of it that each viewport has. it’s not a live viewport, it’s rendered into your layout file.
lyout 26,2 is a dud. they “fixed” a few things but doing so broke several other things.
at this point, reverting to 26,1 is a valid solution.
Thank you for your reply. I will probably do that and roll back to the previous version.
I’m also attaching a screenshot of what I see when I try to contact SketchUp Support. Unfortunately, because of my organization’s license, I’m unable to submit a support request, so this forum is the only place where I can get help.
ok, I had the same issue recently, it’s not your licence, it’s the fact that you’re not the manager ?
there should be a person with full power over your licence, they can either report a problem, or grand you support access
Unfortunately, I can’t share the file due to confidentiality.
However, I’m confident the problem is not the model. As I mentioned earlier, the exact same SketchUp model and LayOut document update in about 30–40 seconds on another laptop running an older version of LayOut, while 26.2.243 takes about 5 minutes.
Yes, the model is not lightweight because I use it both for producing drawings in LayOut and for Enscape visualizations. More importantly, I see the same behavior with my other projects as well. The fact that the update time changes so dramatically depending on the LayOut version makes me believe the issue is related to the latest update rather than to a specific model.
I experienced a similar issue with some of our client-facing models. The one thing I’ve noticed is there’s a significant difference between loading a Raster model and a Vector model or a hybrid. Are you specifically rendering with the Raster or Vector style? What is your polygon and line count inside of the SketchUp models?
Hello there, we currently are not seeing a SketchUp license assigned to the email address you have attached to your profile in the forum. If you have another email you use or we could check we can look at your permissions. Your ability to access technical support depends on your current license which we cannot locate at this time. Feel free to DM me if needed.
I usually work in Raster mode. I only switch to Hybrid when I need to place precise dimensions because the snapping is more accurate. Once I’m done adding dimensions, I switch back to Raster.
I’m also attaching a screenshot of the model statistics.
I have just installed the older 26.1.189 and performed the exact same actions using the same file. All 11 viewports updated in about 40 seconds, while in 26.2.243 the exact same file took about 5 minutes to update. This makes me fairly confident that the issue is related to the new version.
My hypothesis is that, during a model update, the new version processes each viewport individually instead of updating all of them together. If I divide the 5-minute update time by my 11 viewports, it comes to about 27 seconds per viewport, which looks very much like each viewport is being updated sequentially.
Yes agreed, there is a noticeable difference in the speed of processing of the viewports. I must say your entire model count between edges, faces, and component instances is nothing too hectic for the kind of project that you’re running on your machine.
I do however want to ask you: you have 1,200 component definitions but only 1,000 component instances. Does this mean at the moment that you have not potentially purged your model from the last time that you were designing things in it? It might just help to clean the model up slightly. However for the long term going back one version is temporarily a solve.
If you’d like you can also sign up to SketchUp Labs and test out some of the newer features, where there are some significant improvements being made in layout, focusing more on the use of your graphics card. I must say testing that is already showing me much improvement for people rendering in vector or hybrid fashion. Feel free to sign up to Labs below.
Hi, I’m also having the same issue, with layout and the viewports when resizing all the dimensions break, it’s a bit frustrating that part, what I do usually is I select the viewport and the dims, then I moved them left and right so they dimensions get attached again to the model, but definitely, it’s an issue with this new update. Hopefully the SketchUp support team reads this.
I tested the June LayOut Labs build, but unfortunately the issue remains the same. Updating all viewports still takes about 5 minutes. I hope this will be fixed before the release of SketchUp 2027.
Regarding Purge Unused Components, you were right—the components had not been purged. Unfortunately, on my main work laptop, running this feature causes SketchUp to close without any error message. It works correctly on my other laptop, so I purge large projects there. However, I don’t believe this is the cause, since the exact same model was used for the comparison in both versions. That laptop has slightly better hardware, although I wouldn’t consider my main work laptop underpowered. That’s a separate issue, and once I get access to SketchUp Support, I’ll open a separate support case for it.
OK great! I’m glad you got the test to feature in the Labs environment and as other people in the thread have said it’s best to share any of your insights on Labs, which we greatly encourage. Thank you also for purging your components and seeing if that made the difference.
I must say I’ve had quite a lot of experience with retail store environments where the new Labs version rendering methods are making a big difference because I can leave the product, the merchandise, in my SketchUp model. It renders it correctly and relatively quickly.
Thank you also for raising the issue of purging, which shuts down your SketchUp without an error message. I’ve never had that experience. Do you by any chance also use Cleanup 3, the extension warehouse plugin? It often makes an improvement beyond the use of the normal purging in the SketchUp native tool set.
