Settings for font, lineweight, text and dimensionstyles always goes back to standard

Hi forum!

This has always been a problem for me but i have always worked around it.

When i use layout i dont want to use the font verdana for text and i also want to have another thickness to my lines and the dimensioning should not be with arrows. When i start i Layout this settings is ALWAYS the same and i have to start over and change them. is there anyway i can do some settings in layout to ALWAYS start with the same settings? And no, saving it as a template does not work.

Saving as a template will work. Where are you saving the template? Are you selecting your custom template. Are you still using SketchUp 2023?

I must be missing something here, it will not work for me. Here is a video of the problem

Yes. I see your problem. In order for any of those settings to do anything you must have an appropriate tool selected or you must select some entity. For example if you want to change the font for dimensions you must first select the Dimension tool. Then make the desired settings and proceed with adding dimensions or saving as a template. If you want to change content that is already on the page, select it and then make the settings.

Thanks for adding the video. That helped very much to troubleshoot your problem.

Thanks for your quick respons!

i does not work for me im afraid, as soon as i start a new project (with that template) or open another project i already have been workin in the settings are back to other standard and not what i want. here is a video when i tried to choose the tool first and the change the settings and after that saved it as a template.

Thanks for helping me!

The Save as Template window looks strange to me. Mine looks like this:

It seems like there should be more in the Template folder.

What happens if you actually place place a text box, label, and dimension, edit them, and then erase them before saving as a template? It shouldn’t be required but it might work in your case. Here’s what I get when I work through the same process you showed. Sorry. No sound. My 3D printer is running nearby.

I wonder if you might need to repair the SketchUp and LayOut installation. It wouldn’t hurt to do so anyway. Close SketchUp and LayOut. Find the installer in your Downloads folder, right click on it, choose Run as administrator, and then Repair.

This is so strange, that does not work for me. I would say that i had this problem since sketchup 2017 or something. Since then i have also changed computer and done a couple of new installations and it has always been like this.

Definitely strange. What happens if you select the Text tool after opening your latest template. Does it still show Verdana or does it switch? What is the font in the title block?

How have you been creating templates all this time?

Selecting one of the tools does not make any changes, it is still verdana and 10 in size, the settings is always the same. Its the same with the settings for labeling measurements, its back to meters and 0,01 and not millimeters and 1 as i choosed.

The fonts in the rest of my drawing is worksans and kanit.

I have also tried to take one of the standard templates wich comes with sketchup when installing and made my changes and saving it as a template. Its the same, its back to verdana as a font and 10 in font size.

Yes, it is the same template i always had but with some changes on the way :).

This is very strange indeed. Clearly there is something weird going on with your computers. When you repaired the installation did you right click on the installer and select Run as administrator? I wonder if @adam would have any insight. Maybe when he comes in to work on Monday he’ll be able to chime in.

Nope, i did not choose " run as administrator" but i did now and this is what i get.

It seems to have some issues with the language pack. When i re-install i get no problems but when running the repair as administator it will not work. The repair stops there.

Using Run as administrator is required to get Windows permissions set correctly.

Try this: Run the installer using Run as administrator. Instead of choosing Repair, choose Uninstall. Then download a new copy of the installer from Download All | SketchUp | SketchUp

Do a power off reboot of the computer, then go to the new copy of the installer, right click, choose Run as administrator, and install SketchUp and LayOut.

This shouldn’t impact your installed extensions or other customized settings.

Ok, will try that :).

I hope it’ll help. With it being the weekend we can only try until we can get some advice from Adam.

Nope, im afraid that did not help either. Here is another video when testing after the new installation and also with a sketchup template.

Hmmm … I think we need Adam’s help.

You could try the offline installer.
First, uninstall the current and delete the %LocalAppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2024\LayOut folder

Than download the offline version, which holds all the languages packs and try to install it…

This is an interesting issue, @Mr.Vain. Could you please send me your template file that should have the correct settings but doesn’t show that way?

As a separate test, can you try making a template file that contains no entities at all and see if any settings are preserved?

Thanks,
Adam

Just tried to explode all groups and then made my changes with the same result, the settings goes back as it was. Verdana font and size 10 and so on.

I meant actually delete all the contents to have a blank document. I don’t expect it to work, but it would remove a potential source of conflict just in case.
