Selecting a 3d shape

Just created an island vertical partition that I am not able to select easily with double click.

It seems that double clicking on the 2D face selects it with the edges, however not the whole 3d depth of it:

However, triple clicking selects the whole island:

I wanna be able to only select the 3d partition. Am I missing something?

Single click/face, double click/face and edges, triple click/all connected.
It’s as simple as that.
Then you make groups and components and they are just wrapped versions of that.

Download and attach your model for a fuller answer.

Sounds simple indeed; but then what is my best way to select the full partition? I wanna be able to recess it back a little bit.

Attaching my model.

Are you trying to model this thing to use as plans in your shop or something?

I would suggest modeling each “board” that you would make in the shop as a component so they don’t become welded together as the geometry in your model is.

By the way, is this really supposed to be a cabinet? It’s giant!

I guessed at the dimensions you really want. Probably wrong but I can’t imagine a kitchen island being 22 feet long or 9 feet tall. I modeled each part as a component using Move/Copy and Flip to make the counterparts where appropriate. I also made an example with joinery and an exploded view of that version.

Spend some time learning the basics.
As I said in other posts, learn to use groups and components to separate geometry.

Thanks! Yes, that’s exactly what I’m working on now—learning the basics by building something myself. I’ve watched multiple intro videos, but things didn’t fully click until I started trying it out.

For example, when creating a 3D shape that I want to be fully selectable with a double-click, here’s my process: I start by creating a 2D face, turn it into a component, and then use the Push tool to extrude that face into a 3D shape. The resulting shape becomes easily selectable.

Does this mean that the result of a “Push” on a component is also treated as a component itself?

Thanks Dave. Please Ignore the dimensions for now please; I didn’t pay attention to that yet while learning.
By the way, my understanding is that I cannot adjust/modify dimensions in the lower bottom right text box after the fact; and I would need to resize shapes manually if I they are drawn already. Is that right?

You can’t select a 3D object by double clicking. If it’s a group or component, a double click opens it for editing like we have told you before.
If it’s loose geometry a double click on a face selects the face and it’s bounding edges. We told you that before too.
Why don’t you go to: learn.sketchup.com and learn the basics. It’s a good place to start.

No, you cannot push-pull on a component. You can push-pull a face inside a component when it’s opened for editing…
Of course everything you add during editing will be part of the component.

This indicates to me that you are trying to apply workflows from other applications.

You can open the components for editing and make changes to the dimensions if needed but you cannot simply select a component or an edge within the component and type a new dimension for it. The method used for resizing the component will depend on the feature contained in the component and how the thing needs to be resized.

Example: Changing the height of the cabinet. Move to move the top up, Push/Pull to extrude the top faces of the vertical components.
