Importing a skp file and trying to scale it to fit the model changes the sizes. So best to do it all again?

It’s not clear what you want to achieve here. You are only scaling in one direction by grabbing a center handle on one end. This is normal behavior. If you want to scale the entire component in three axis, grab it by a corner handle.
Are you actually trying to elongate the square part of the extension? If so, don’t use the scale tool as that will scale everything including the facetted end. Instead, just select the facetted end section and move it out. Then that will stay as it is and just the rectilinear part will elongate.
