Revit 2024/Revit 2026 not working with SketchUp Studio 2025

Hi,

I’ve upgraded from Sketchup Pro 2025 to SketchUp Studio 2025 solely to be able to import Revit models (.rvt) from architects into our SketchUp landscape design models.

  1. Architects have Revit 2024 (.rvt) model which should be compatible with Sketchup Studio 2025 import however, Revit model import fails after getting this message:

“The version of the Revit file is not supported.”

Does anyone know why that is?

  • SketchUp Studio is installed
  • Revit Importer extension is installed and up to date
  • I’ve resigned in and restarted multiple times

I’ve resorted to importing AutoCAD 3D dwg file instead which proved semi unsuccessful as none of the initial Revit textures would be transferred and having to go back into SketchUp model to reapply texture on each face with every update from architects would not be the best use of time. The next potential solution might be importing the IFC model into SketchUp so we’ll see how that goes - I anticipate the same texture issue. The goal is to preserve Revit textures throughout design and construction process and to maintain consistency as we move through importing of models through different programs (Revit, SketchUp, Lumion).

  1. We work with other architecture firms who have now upgraded to using Revit 2026 and I’m anticipating there could be issues moving forward as SketchUp works to catch up to update the Revit Importer. Is this a matter of just waiting for SketchUp? Does this mean SketchUp consistently won’t be able to import any models saved with new Revit for months at a time with each Revit release?

  2. I’ve updated my SketchUp and all its extensions today and received notice that Revit importer has been updated. I’ve restarted SketchUp and computer, tried to open a Revit 2026 (.rvt) model and it was still unsuccessful.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @ithoun,

Revit 2024 is supported, but not Revit family files (.rfa or .rft). Please can you share the problematic 2024 .rvt file with us so we can investigate (you can DM me your email address if not OK to publicly share and I will email you).

Revit 2026 support will not be available until after it is added to the library we use, that is usually around October.

regards,
Dan

Hi @ithoun,

The file you shared is a .ZIP file, but with a .RVT extension*.
Revit Importer for SketchUp has no support for these files, but you can open the Revit files it contains by renaming the file to .RVT.ZIP and then extracting the files using the Windows explorer “Extract All” functionality, or using an application that supports ZIP files (7-zip is a free option).

*I don’t know how this would happen, but guessing maybe a download/share .RVT.ZIP from ACC/BIM360/eTransmit that then got renamed to .RVT as that was what was being expected to be received?
