I have a very large file for (a very large house) and I am continuously running into “application memory issues” where my file will quit. At this point I don’t even have the abilty to have chrome or layout open at the same time that I have this file open.
I know my edge count is really high - i’ve hidden all my furntiure and things that I can in order to help live rendering but do need these things in my model. I purge unsused often, I use tags etc.
Does deleting other old sketchup files from the app/my computer help at all? Every time I open this file it steadily jumps up to 18 GB of my memory- probably more at times.Just feeling so frustrated as I can’t even work in the file without it crashing every 5 minutes- please help! It’s too big to even upload here-is there a way to compress any upload?
Hiding items will not help you in this situation. They are still there just not visible to you. there is no magic bullet to this unfortunately you will need to optimise various aspects of this model and maybe even get a better machine.
18gb of memory being used is going to be hard to work with on any machine.
Is it bugsplatting or just freezing?
I’m guessing the skp file is 100s of MBs too?
It may just be auto saving which is why it would freezing whilst that happens.
Purge
I’d run cleanup3 with the repair split edges and remove stray edges.
Also “merge duplicate materials”
I just duplicated the file and created one where I deleted all unnecessary furniture items, switched out toilets to ones with less edges etc.
It’s autosaving and then i get a popup saying ive run out of memory and it prompts me to force quit the application. If I don’t force quit manually it just quits on its own.
The file size is about 300 MB and I reduced edge count down from 9 mil to 7 mil- porgress but obviously still high.
I’ll try the clean up and merging advice. Thank you again
Following Adam’s suggestion I’ve started CleanUp3 with Merge Identical Materials and Merge Coplanar Faces selected but it still has a lot to do. Back as soon as I can with a link for the reduced file. It ought to be considerably smaller, though.
Here’s the file. I think it’s still larger than it needs to be but the cleanup reduced the file size by 50%. Those hanging light groups over the kitchen island. Each add more than half a million edges to your model.
If your entire “story” for this model is about those lights, you might justify their size but if they are just a small part of the story they are obese. I’d simplify them.
I expect even as the main event they don’t need the level of detail those have. If they do, I would suggest finding other places to cut back since evidently your computer can’t handle the geometry. Think of it as a budget. You went over budget with your model and your computer let you know. If you have to “spend” a huge amount on those lights, you’ll need to go cheaper elsewhere.
I did notice all the lines of my cabinetry have seem to dissapeared. Is this the effect of cleaning it up? Dave, the dropbox file is now delted Is it possible resend?. Sorry not sure what happened!
i do need those edges though- is there a way to undo that and still use your reduced file? or would i need to start from scratch in an old version with the edges and reduce file size on my own?
The cleanup can’t be undone on the saved file. I can go through from your original and do the other cleanup but skip merging stuff. It won’t be as small and it’ll have to wait for a while because I don’t have time to do it right this minute.
Dave, I am attatching a smaller file with all of the furntiure deleted and with some larger items replaced with simpler versions (deleted two of those pendants and will simplify later). which i think helps. No worries on time. Whenever you’re available to if it’s not too much to ask. New File
