REALLY basic question about backup files

Hello,

We are trying to get rid of data bulk…We have saved daily-work-files of each model and would like to lighten up the NAS’s data load…the general thought was to get rid of the backup files to each model. Does anyone see a problem with erasing the .skb files to the models?? These are all archived or finished projects, it’s just a matter of keeping the models saved and the steps to the finished project, in case they are needed again in the future.

Input would be greatly appreciated.

A SKB file is made in the model’s folder when you save your SKP model.
This backup-file is only useful if you have a crash which ruins your currently unsaved SKP file e.g. it in someway corrupts it.
You can then rename the SKB to SKP and use that, then you will be working one save back, but provided that you have robust working practices which have you saving your model at frequent instances or just before doing some operation you see as ‘risky’, you’ll only have lost say 15mins work…
So the SKP and SKB are not identical - the latter is one save behind…

Incidentally, the MAC OS’s backup files are named differently.
xxx.SKP >> xxx~.SKP
compared to the PC’s
xxx.SKP >> xxx.SKB

Also, you should do your normal saves onto a local disk, and only use remote networked or Cloud storage when you’ve completed a block of work and saved it locally, for copying over outside of SketchUp. Working and saving remotely is known to cause unexpected file errors, potentially making the SKP and SKB vulnerable, because then they are both at risk

you can delete them, but I would first open the .Skp file (without saving, just read) and make sure it works fine
