Poor line quality with new graphics engine?

Yes… a big difference!

I haven’t got this issue.

You screenshot looks like things are scaled very different to what I’m seeing.

Can you run a DXDIAG and post the log here?
Open and run DxDiag.exe - Microsoft Support

With SU2024 it is using a much more modern graphics API and as a result your NVIDIA drivers will interact with it very differently.
The newer UI also interacts differently with windows, so there is lots of room for variability, which is the name of the game with computers.

I suspect this is an nvidia driver thing. When I switched from amd to nvidia over the last year, I noticed this on multiple apps… Including SKP. I haven’t been able to find the the exact nvidia setting to fix it either going through their own control panel (manage 3d settings). I don’t think I spend much time but I recall changing settings like anti aliasing on the nvidia panel didn’t fix or change it like it did on my old AMD panel.

I don’t believe anyone who says nvidia has better driver support than AMD. Faster cards maybe but not better support or reliability or customizability.

could be, I’m not seeing that much difference on mac. I’m using 0x AA on 24 as I used on 23 and nothing really shocked me.

maybe the way Nvidia talks to directX12 ?

on mac, the main difference is in tone, with Metal the colours a a bit lighter. slight enough that I had to compare screenshots to notice.

ok, so you have a slightly complicated setup and windows is reporting some strange stuff, which could explain your issues.

1.Your display adapter is using drivers from 2022 - 30.0.101.2079
You can update from intel here
Intel® Driver & Support Assistant

  1. Your Bios is a few versions behind as well, as you are using an integrated device for your displays, then that’s something worth checking.
I think it is this one , but you may want to check yourself
OMEN by HP Laptop 17-ck0xxx (6V9C0U8) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

  2. It looks like you have 2 displays
    Native Mode: 2560 x 1440(p) (60.000Hz)
    Native Mode: 3840 x 1080(p) (119.974Hz)

The 2nd one is strange, because Windows is saying it is running above that resolution, but it is saying that the native resolution is 3840 x 1080, which is not correct for the samsung ultrawide.
This in itself could produce strange scaling and a lack of clarity across the board : that would easily manifest in jaggies as you are seeing.

It’s also saying one is a clone of the other, which doesn’t sound possible, as one is a different aspect ratio and the internal resolution of the smaller display is significantly lower.

How is the Samsung connected, it says an external display port. Is that a regular display port cable?

There is a firmware update for your samsung monitor - I would do that.

I would also ensure your monitors are set to “extend” rather than clone or mirror.

Thanks for your input. I’m not sure that I should start messing with settings as everything works great on all other programs including Rendering engines. I think this is something that needs to be pointed out by SU & advise on appropriate settings if so many people are experiencing the same issue.

Had to jump back in here: Even after more NVIDIA Control Panel tweaks, I am still seeing that the lines in the new graphic engine are noticeably thicker, but the amount of speed and smoothness is outstanding. Way to go, SketchUp team!! I would really like to have the ability of the line thickness and antialiasing look like the classic graphic engine in the future, but man, this new version is slick! Keep it up!!

Hi! I was searching info on this matter and found this thread. I currently have both versions installed (2023 and 2024) and indeed lines are thicker with the new engine. I know it’s not an “issue” per se, but I like more the old look, it’s cleaner when lines are close or when you zoom out a very detailed model.

I hope it can be tweaked on future updates. In every other way the new engine works flawlessly, faster and the AO look is game changer to me. Thanks team!

I agree the line quality is “fuzzier”/thicker in the new engine. But it’s mostly a non-issue for me since everything goes to a render engine or into Layout where I don’t see the line quality difference. I only notice it while live modeling. Haven’t compared any raw SketchUp exports but I imagine if I was upset with the new quality I’d just switch to Classic for exporting? Or maybe Trimble can add the ability to choose which engine to use on export?

@kyeric - Any tweaks worth sharing that helped at all? Sidebar: I’ll chime in here and say that G-Sync seems to do some weird things with the new engine. I get some cursor lag after orbiting and if G-Sync is set to “fullscreen or window” mode, I get cursor lag (worse yet) when the switching hovering over model space to the menu bars. AutoCAD and Lightroom have the same issue and my quick fix is to simply turn off G-Sync.
EDIT: Use Profile Inspector and change G-Sync - Application State → Force Off for SketchUp (and any other problematic app). That way G-Sync doesn’t need to be turned off globally.

Can you please share what Nvidia Control Panel settings you’ve made? Thanks!

I mostly just maxed out the settings, but see I’ve gotten slightly better visuals with the Antialiasing Mode switched to “Enhance the application setting”. See if that works for you. Good luck and here’s to less jaggy lines!

I’ve been using Sketchup since the very early days when Google released it. I’m sure many would agree that the clarity and quality of lines in Sketchup has improved exponentially and is something us old timers have known and appreciated overtime. Yes, I could continue using the new engine with the jagged lines, but, it just seems like a step backwards… Which is a shame at this point as a clean looking model is now just what I’m used to. I hope the team can fix this issue as I’d like to take advantage of the new engine…

It has been discussed here :

yes it has. the thread you’re linking to is from may of 2024 and this one april of 2024

not sure why it needed to be dug up…?
