What exactly do these ‘organic bushes’ look like? Do you have an example?
What you see in the image is probably just a texture applied over a sphere, and in the rendering software it has a BUMP tex applied.

yes, but my question is rather how to draw such a nicely contiguous sphere. They seem to flow into each other.
