Performance Issues with 2022

Hi

I’ve got some questions and I’m hoping you can help me out. I work in IT and am new to Sketchup and have an issue with the performance of Sketchup on a laptop. The laptop itself is a ASUS ROG Strix G15 with a Ryzen 7 16GB Ram and a RTX 3050. Spec wise it should meet the requirements for 2022 which is what the user is using however when the user is trying to navigate the design it is slow to unusable when moving around the design and when doing any work on it. We have tested the same file on other machines both desktops and laptops and they both didn’t seem to have the same issues. The file itself is around 130mb in size.

I have seen the issue in person and after discussing with one of the other designers we have thoughts about some possible causes for these issues.

Could having multiple Sketchup files open at once impact on performance?
Could a ram upgrade to 32GB (Max supported by the laptop) improve performance?
Are there any tweaks that can be done to the software that can improve issues?
Could running the file form an online source cause performance issues or would the file be held locally while being accessed?

My main goal for this user is to have the laptop working without the need for them to do any tweaks to it every time they need to use the software.

Any Advice is very much welcome

Make sure SketchUp is using the discrete Nvidia GPU. Check in:

  • Window > Preferences > Graphics > Details

Also, update the graphics driver from the Nvidia website.

The VRAM of the GPU might need to be shared. Not sure? Seems easy enough to test.

it wouldn’t hurt. This is likely to improve running multiple applications most.

Besides using a fast style assigned to a dedicated modeling scene (and only use presentation style settings with a presentation scene,) … perhaps updating to SketchUp 2024 and using the new graphics engine (which bypasses OpenGL and makes DirectX 12 calls) would be a way to see the most improvement.

Another way would be to use lighter geometry. Reduce the number of circle and arc segments and do not import high poly components from the 3D Warehouse.

Again, see the Improving Performance Help article.

This can often result in corrupted SKP files if network latency is a problem. Look at all the pleas for help with model files in the Technical Issues categories.

Best to keep a local file and sync with the NAS. Another option is to save the file to the Trimble Connect cloud service which keeps multiple versions automatically.
