Make Component Dialogue in Sketchup Free Cannot be Controlled by Keyboard

Hi All,

This is my first post here, apologies in advance if I’m getting something wrong. I’m currently following some tutorials to learn SketchUp Free and I noticed that when I’m making a Component, the dialogue does not focus the input box and cannot be closed by hitting Enter, Cmd-Enter, or any other keyboard shortcut I can think of. Instead I have to click into the dialogue, type my component name, and then click Create.

It this expected? Or am I hitting a bug? Things like specifying dimensions by typing in numbers work just like so without having to click. This happens on the latest version of Chrome as well as on Safari on MacOS. I also tried installing SketchUp as a Chrome App but that didn’t help either.

Thanks for any help or pointers what could cause this.

Can you show a screen recording of what you are seeing? This is what I see and it works as expected.

Yes, this seems to be the case with the web based versions of SketchUp. When creating a new Component, the dialogue box which opens does not have the component name pre-selected and ready for typing, you must click into the box, and pressing return does not trigger the create button, again you must press the button.

In SketchUp Pro for desktop, both of these UI choices are the opposite, on Make Component you can immediately start typing the name, and return creates the component, which is faster and easier. Perhaps in the future the UI of the Web version can be changed to match Pro, but for now it does not.

There is a bit of inconsistency as to which dialog boxes respond to pressing return to activate the primary action (and which ones don’t). We’ll keep taking a look and see if there’s an opportunity to make it more consistent across SketchUp for Web.

Thanks @ktr , @DaveR , and @endlessfix !
