I installed 2025 a couple of days ago to try out some of the new features. My understanding is that it’s completely independent from 2024 and has separate install and appdata folders. I opened and closed both of them repeatedly without issue. Then I spent 2 days not using Sketchup at all and on the 3rd day I double clicked on a skp file in my windows explorer. It opened automatically in 2025, which I didn’t want. So I closed 2025 and opened 2024. When 2024 opened, it needed me to log in to trimble again, which I felt was weird. I did so, then when 2024 eventually opened, ALL of my extensions were gone. I went hunting for the appdata directory where the plugins live, and they’re all deleted out of the directory.
Is this a known issue? Is there any way to recover this?
When you open the extensions manager is it empty or can you see the extensions you’ve installed? There are some extensions that are native, like sandbox and dynamic components that should be on the extensions manager list.
No one else has reported anything like that here. With version 2025 you can use the Extension Migrator extension to add extensions from earlier SketchUp installs to your current one, but even that copies them without erasing the older ones.
Did you happen to log into your computer with a different user account than usually? Extensions reside in your personal Appdata folder.
I’m open to suggestions. It doesn’t seem like there’s any play to recover this. The problem is that I had a lot of custom settings for these plugins. I don’t understand how a program can just delete all of your stuff.
I’ve never heard of the Sketchup installer deleting anything from the user folder.
The folder: c:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2024\ remains intact even if you uninstall SU2024.
Either you or someone else deleted it. Don’t you have it in a Recycle Bin?
Are you sure those missing extensions weren’t in an earlier version, such a SU2023 c:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2023?
Never had any other version than 2024 on this computer. No other person has used my computer. Nothing was in the recycle bin.
Now I have a new problem: I can’t change the default skp opening program to 2024. I tried multiple times and it refuses to change the default from 2025. So I’m just uninstalling 2025. I’ve already put all the extensions back on 2024 so I guess might as well close the thread. It doesn’t seem to really bring anything to the table that I care about over 2024 at this point. Probably just use SU 2024 and LO 2025.
Download fresh SketchUp 2024 installer from here: Download All | SketchUp | SketchUp
Right click on an installer chose Run as administrator, accept UAC prompt, when prompted chose Repair.
This should set SU2024 to open skp-s as default.
Also worth noting that despite losing all the extensions, I didn’t lose any of my keyboard shortcuts to those extensions nor did I lose any of the settings for them (specially curic section and 5D+, I think because I had them pointing to folders that weren’t sketchup plugin folders).
So overall it ended up being about a 20 minute recovery.
