Length snapping not working as expected

hello

new user here. i cannot work out why distances are

  1. showing as approximate
  2. are not snapping to 0.5cm which i have asked it to

i simply want everything in 0.5cm i don’t want to see 8.7 cm when i’m offsetting this wall here, i don’t want to see a tilde suggesting this is approximate, i just want everything to snap to 0.5cm i don’t understand why this is so hard

can someone help?

thanks

Length snapping is not grid snapping. For me, Length snapping is totally useless and I always turn it off.

I don’t see a ~ anywhere in your screenshot

Turn off ‘Length Snapping’.
Use ‘Offset’ and just type the distance to offset, thus type 0.5 and hit [Enter]

erm, in the distance box?

If you drag the ‘Offset’ tool out you can start typing. Don’t try to click in the ‘Measurements’ box, what you type will appear there.

yes, aware of keyboard entry of values. really just concerned why things aren’t snapping to 0.5cm when using the offset tool with the mouse. when i use the line tool, it is snapping to 0.5cm and most other tools, snapping to 0.5cm, when i use the offset tool, weird values.

maybe it is because offsetting is an x and y axis operation it doesn’t consider it a ‘length’ so length snapping doesn’t apply.

Don’t use Length Snapping if you want to model with accuracy and precision.

Anssi, how are you able to turn length snapping off?
Ticking off selection at “Window>Model info>Units>Enable length snapping” does turn it off like expected. Looks like a bug (which has been in the previous versions also). I mostly model in metrics and objects jumping by one meter steps is very annoying.

Why do you call turning off length snapping a bug? It works as expected. I always turn it off and use my keyboard to enter exact values when needed.

Well, not perfectly… you can not switch it off completely, try this out:

I hadn’t noticed that as I always work in Millmeters, with maximum decimals enabled. Yes, that would be a bug.

You got it wrong, The lenght snapping just does not turn off completely. The items in the screen keeps still bouncing with one meter steps even if the box is empty. If the “Display precision” is changed for example from 0 m to 0,0 m, the items will then bounce with 0,1 m steps etc. No actual snapless movement available.

What you are noticing is the case, and seems to have always been that way. That particular template shows up the problem more, because display precision is set to 0 m. The way the code works for you is that if length snapping is turned off, the length will still snap to the display precision value. I have no idea why it was done that way. For now, set the display precision to a lot of decimal places, and then it effectively will not be snapping.

We have that fixed in the next update you should see from us. Can’t yet say when that will be.
