I am still having issues with the most recent Layout update (25.0.659) crashing when trying to update a viewport. Just this morning I had 3 crashes in a row when trying to refresh viewports (Most recent Bug Splat #12525 for any Sketchup employees reading this). There does not seem to be a discernible pattern as to what causes it. Complex model viewports and simple 2d line drawing model viewports can both trigger it so I don’t think it’s a model complexity issue. Saving before every viewport refresh has now become almost automatic for me to prevent loosing any work. I am running on MacOS 15.5, M1 Ultra Mac Studio with the latest 25.0.659 Sketchup update installed.
I’m not sure whether you’re experiencing the same problem as me but I recently encountered a similar issue where I had to switch back to using the classic graphics engine in SketchUp.
Since then I’ve had no layout crashes at all.
That was the first thing I did when I started having this issue and it’s not helping in my case unfortunately.
@Colin - sent in one from today - thankfully I had a recovery file to work with. This is happening often when I alter the model, save, then refresh the viewports. There should be multiple bugs plats from me (most from last week, I think) - either under my forum email or beta email.
@brad.aycock I was having massive issues with this as well, I thought it was my templates so done a few tests with no templates and all new models and layout files with the same result.
not sure why but following at least 6 crashes in a row I decided to update the model references while on a blank page in layout (exact same layout file and model just a blank page with no viewports) and everything updated nicely.
since then I have a blank page now labeled as ‘reference update’ that I don’t put viewports in. I have not had a crash since doing this.
My work college who had the same issue with crashing has now also adopted this method.
Id be very curious to know if this make a difference for you as well.
Interesting and thank you for the tip. I will try that today and see how it goes and report back.
@steven3 UPDATING THE MODEL REFERENCE WHILE ON A BLANK PAGE was the answer on this project file. THANK YOU Steven3.
This bug has been ruining me for days now. Getting crashes and blank model viewports when altering the SKP model and updating Layout. Tried re-linking, re-installing, etc.
I don’t get how to mark not to include the blank page when exporting, other than manually excluding it each time, but a small hassle considering this saved my bacon.
I don’t think I was ever using the new graphics engine so that can’t be my problem.
Been using Layout for at least 15 yrs and never had this kind of critical issue.
I got @steven3 's bugsplat, so that’ll help bigly. We’ll get this fixed. Thanks!

So I have been updating my model references on a blank page as suggested and sure enough, after 3 days of testing on and off, I can confirm that this stops the crashes when updating for me. It’s a bit annoying to have to go to a blank page and the go to document setup to refresh rather than just right clicking, but it’s better than it crashing constantly. Thank you for the tips.
@brad.aycock good to hear its stopped the crashes for you. Agreed it is a tad annoying but for now it works.
I imagine the development team will have more of an idea of what’s going on, I just put it down to some kind a graphics issue that my machine couldn’t handle while a viewport was open.
I spoke too soon. Working on some small details this morning and it crashed when refreshing the model reference on the blank page…
If anyone has a file you can share, I can automate a continuous cycle of this to see if it’ll crash for me. PM me. Thanks in advance.
I’m sending you one.
