Layout issues!

Hello! Really frustrating issue, would be so grateful if someone can help. I have built a house in Sketchup, hardly any textures. All working fine in SU but when I send to Layout, the issues arrise. I cannot update model reference, switch to Vector or Hybrid or export to PDF without getting the spinning wheel for so long that I have to force quit.
I have purged my Sketchup file and although it is big, I have worked on far more complicated projects without these issues…

I looked at the SketchUp model and did my usual cleanup process. First, fixing incorrect tag usage.

Then purging unused stuff. Seems like you are hoarding a lot of components and materials.

There are also some excessively large textures in the model which I resized although they won’t come into play in the Hidden Line viewports.

I also ran CleanUp3 to merge coplanar faces. That little bit of cleanup was good for more than a 54% reduction in file size. Even so, there’s quite a large number of edges that LayOut has to work through when rendering viewports as Vector or Hybrid. I moved some furniture in the model and then updated the reference in LayOut. It took my computer about 30 seconds to update the viewport. Your “memory” graphics card, whatever it is might just need to be given more time.

I see a couple of blank reference paths in thelist in your LayOut file. I haven’t yet located what they are supposed to be.

What operating system are you using? Your profile says “22.0.353” but that doesn’t identify an operating system.

Firstly, thank you for replying.
Operating system:

1 - ‘fixing incorrect tag usage’ - please may you expand and tell me how to do this myself and also how to avoid in future modelling?
2 -Purge unused stuff’ - i think i’ve just done this, could you confirm if this means 'Model Info > statistics > purge?
3 - I have downloaded that material resizer and will use that! Is there a good px size to reduce to where it doesnt compromise the quality too much?
4 - I have downloaded CleanUp3 and unticked everything except merge coplanar faces like you said, except this is the message I got:

You’re quite welcome.

Please correct your forum profile. Are you still using SketchUp and LayOut 2022?

All edges and faces should be created and remain untagged in SketchUp. Only groups and components should be given tags. I used Default Tag Geometry, a plugin by the venerable TIG which is available from Sketchucation to quickly fix this. It seems to be a common thing that components from the 3D Warehouse come in with tagged geometry. Exploding a tagged object (group or component) to raw geometry will cause the geometry to inherit the tag so you need to be mindful of that. If you have some reason to explode an object to raw geometry the immediate next step while the geometry is still highlighted should be to change the tag to Untagged in Entity Info.

Yes. That’ll work. I use a plugin, also by TIG, called Purge All which does the same thing but also provides the report I showed.

I don’t think there’s a one size fits all sort of answer. It depends on what the texture is and how it is used in the model. I’ve seen plant components with hi res textures for the leaves and stems. They are so small relative to the rest of the model that they could be extermely low resolution. Unless the model is all about the plant, the leaves and stems probably don’t really need textures at all. Those textures could be replaced with simple colors.

I’ve also see things like wine bottles with hi res label textures but the wine bottles are in a cooler and the labels aren’t visible. The labels could be removed and in fact, most of the bottle geometry deleted in a case like that.

You really need to think about where you invest in details and textures to get a decent return. You’ve stuck a lot into the bar stools in the kitchen but practically nothing into the dining table and chairs. Maybe the bar stools could be replaced with simpler objects and still tell the same story. You probably don’t want the client looking too closely at those stools, anyway. The backs aren’t symmetrical.

That message indicates there’s something tiny in the model; probably one of the detailed components you added. I don’t expect it’ll cause you any problems.

When you are getting components from sources like the 3D Warehouse you should download them into a separate SketchUp session so you can examine them. Do any clean up that needs doing or reject it and look for something else. When you are satisfied, copy it into the project model. That will help keep your project models lighter and more streamlined. Keeping the model lighter reduces the work your computer has to do when rendering both in SketchUp and especially in LayOut.

Using Sketchup 2024. I have re-started my Layout project and it seems to be faster, just 7 hours of time lost…arghh!
In other news, i just ran all the file reducing tips as above and no movement, still stickign at 58MB. Am I missing a trick?

Please update your forum profile.

Not sure. Share the .skp file so I can compare it.

See if this file behaves better. You can get the SketchUp model out by right clicking on a viewport and selecting Open with SketchUp. If you want, you can then save it to replace your original file. Or save it as a different model file.

After saving it you will want to relink the reference so LO is looking for it on your computer and not mine.
