Thanks all for any help. I have attached a short video here detailing a frustrating experience when using Layout with Sketchup Pro 2022. Well, I tried to but the forum thought I was advertising so this is a big problem. I can’t link to the video in google drive, Can’t upload it directly. Is this how problem solving goes with Trimble??
When I adjust the bounds of a viewport, the scale of a viewport, or if I accidentally click within it and invoke the rotate command, the viewport and Layout itself will freeze for minutes on end, sometimes 20 or more. This has shut me down and I need a solution.
This forum will not allow me to post a link to the google drive folder holding the relevant video link
Kitchen Addition 9-11-24.skp (14.0 MB)
yeah, the forum uses Discourse, a forum platform, and in order to avoid spams, it requires you (new users) to spend a bit of time and post a few messages to get all the authorisations.
I’m downloading the file now, but since it’s a layout issue, the layout file would help too.
any reason you’re not on SU24 ? 23 and 24 did a lot of improvement in layout, especially regarding speed and stability.
well, upon opening, SU tells me there are a handful of issues. they’ve been solved.
lots of things to be purged. they shouldn’t impact layout, but still.
PURGED VERSION.skp (6.6 MB)
I created a Layout24 file, imported it, nothing jumps to my mind.
Maybe it has to do with the viewport parameters ? are you in vector mode ?
Looking at your SketchUp file I see a lot of hoarded content and some incorrect tag usage.
I agree with @ateliernab that you would see improved performance in LayOut 2023 and more in LayOut 2024. Still, cleaning up your model would help.
I have not upgraded for 3, possibly invalid reasons.
-
As an Autodesk user, Upgrades of any of their softwares mean loss of functionality and increases your chances of giving a client a file created in a newer version than theirs, making the file unusable for them. Backsaving is a joke, even with proxygraphics on.
-
I am in my first year of using Sketchup, and noticed when learning Blender, that using an older version gives many more useful tutorials, as every new version dispenses with tools, and replaces others.
-
I assumed Trimble would charge more for any upgrade anyway
If these are not a concern I’ll take your word on that.
I have not yet been able to learn about cleaning, purging, auditing, or optimizing these files. I am coming from AutoCAD Architecture, but appreciate the visual style and many Add-ons with SU.
So the advice is upgrade?
I can just do that with my regular PRO subscription?
The forum says my Layout File is too big to upload
I am in Hybrid Mode. Is that an issue?
Hybrid is going to take longer to render.
I was using hybrid for this reason, so that I could import this file back into AutoCAD Architecture, which is where the floorplan drawing is. The Sketchup file contains a 2d section of the AA floorplan, imported in dxf.
Will I be able to reimport the linework into AutoCAD if I use Raster?? Won’t that be inaccurate?
I do want to preserve the capability for others to be able to use the PDFs in vector format, because sometimes that is how we get floorplans in civil drawings when there is no usable CAD file. Is there another pipeline to go back into CAD?
You won’t get vector lines in your export if you leave the viewport rendered as raster. But you can save the Hybrid render until just before you are ready to export.
well since sketchup 21 there is no need to backsave, the files are compatible for now. you gave us a 22 file, I gave back a 24 file, and yet you can open it natively in 22. you’ll get a message telling you the file is more recent, just in case.
in sketchup, no, not realy, a thing changes its name from time to time, they add a new button, but in recent years they’ve been more focused in upgrading the framework and the engine. the icons switched colour in 23.1 but should be the biggest change you’ll feel.
hehehe nope, the main good thing about subscriptions
The pro subscription allows you to use any compatible version (2019+). you don’t HAVE to use the latest but you can. Just keep in mind you can only be connected in 2 versions at a time.
You could very well install sketchup 2024, and keep 2022 just in case (no big deal since the files are compatible)
in short, whenever you download a model from the warehouse, or make a component, or try a material, or import / create a tag (layer), it will remain in your file even if it’s empty or you stop using it.
say you download 3 tables. each has 3 materials. this means your file contains 3 components and 9 materials.
if you delete 2 tables, they’ll remain in the file’s memory.
To remove them, you can purge. most panels (material, components…) have a small menu symbol top right (black arrow over blue/white) where you can purge.
You can also purge in the model info window, under statistics. or using a free extension called PurgeAll
when I purged your file, it went from 14 to 6.6mb - all that was unused junk.
Is there any option like dxf to go from SU to AA?
Going from AA to SU is really nice, IT comes in at the right scale, and as usable linework.
Can I do the opposite? You see, when I finish these projects In SU, I see things in 3d to improve, or where there will be a conflict so I move something.
How can I export a 2d section from SU and take it back into AA?
Thank you much, very good info and a big help
