Hi, I’m having an issue with dimensions in LayOut.
Components rotated at around 30° dimension correctly, but components rotated at exactly 45° give incorrect measurements. For example, a component that is actually 1000 mm high is showing approximately 707 mm.
The component is grouped, and when I edit the group in SketchUp, its local axes are correct. I’ve also tried updating/changing the model axes, but this hasn’t fixed the issue.
Interestingly, if I rotate the model slightly within the LayOut viewport, the dimension becomes correct. I need to keep all my drawings consistently in ISO, so I can’t manually adjust the view for every component.
Is there a way to make LayOut measure the actual geometry correctly while keeping the standard ISO view?
Share you LO file so we can see what you are working with.
This is what I get when I insert dimensions with an iso view. Need to hold the modifier key while placing the dimension which on Mac I believe is Option. It’s Alt on PC.
Thanks for the response. This doesn’t appear to be file-specific, as the issue can be replicated with any SketchUp model.
For example, if you create a simple box measuring 1 m × 1 m, rotate the box by 45°, and then set the LayOut viewport to the standard ISO view and dimension it using the normal Dimension tool, the dimensions are incorrect.
However, if you rotate the model/viewpoint slightly within the LayOut viewport, the dimensions immediately become correct.
So it seems to be related specifically to how LayOut handles dimensions of 45°-rotated geometry in the standard ISO view, rather than anything specific to my model or its axes.
Could you please try reproducing it with this simple example?
The model needs to be rotated 45 degrees on SketchUp and set as an ISO view. When dimensioning this model on layout in ISO, the dimension shows 820mm instead of 1000mm.
The issue only occurs when an object is rotated 45 degrees in SketchUp and the viewport is then set to ISO view. When the file is imported into LayOut and the Dimension tool is used, the dimensions are displayed incorrectly.
However, if the object is rotated slightly within the LayOut viewport, the dimensions immediately display correctly. This suggests the issue is specifically related to how LayOut handles dimensions for objects at exactly 45° in an ISO view.
A very small adjustment to the camera position for the scene resolves the issue. I’m not saying there isn’t an issue to be fixed but it doesn’t really need to stop anyone from creating a dimensioned ISO view of an object that has been rotated in the model space.
I did use Zoom Extents before updating the scene and I set an actual scale in LO but neither of those steps changed the displayed dimension until I orbited the camera very slightly.
What I’ve shown above was just a simple example to demonstrate the issue. I’m actually working on a project where I have multiple objects positioned at a 45-degree angle within a floor space. I need to dimension these individual objects in an ISO view in LayOut, but the dimensions are incorrect because the objects are positioned at exactly 45 degrees.
Interestingly, if I rotate the objects even slightly away from 45 degrees, the dimensions immediately display correctly.
I can save these objects as separate SketchUp files, but that would mean having to rotate each object individually and import each one separately into LayOut. This isn’t really a practical solution, especially as I need to work with multiple objects within the same floor space and may need to make amendments to the SketchUp model later.
Yes, this is exactly the problem I’m having. If it were only a couple of objects, I could work around it, but there are at least 50 objects positioned at 45°, so having to rotate and adjust each one individually would be extremely time-consuming and impractical. I need a way to dimension them accurately while keeping the same ISO view and a single, editable SketchUp model.
