Isometric Views

Student here,

Ive looked on this community for answers but nothing seems to help; the problem is as follows. When creating a Scene on Sketch Up in parallel projection and then importing unto layout, the ‘Isometric’ changes. I’ve tried both leaving the Scene as it is and selecting the Iso View in layout (via Windows - Sketchup Model - and the area where I select my scale etc.) However there has been no luck. Please do note that the vertical lines when printed off are correct however the horizontal is completely off. I hope I haven’t made this confusing. Thank you!!

I was hoping for your LayOut file.

I fixed the scene by zooming in and centering the model in the view.


After sending to LayOut and rendering the viewport as Vector.

They look the same to me.

You should be using groups and components in SketchUp instead of using all loose geometry as you are. And, of course, if you want other views of the model in LayOut, create scenes for those views in the SketchUp model.

As seen in the image it shows 20m however it should be 25. I feel like there’s something glaringly obvious that I am doing wrong, this is the only way I’ll find out. Thank you again!

You’re modifying the Camera properties in LayOut. Note the dark background and the Reset button in the Camera section of the SketchUp Model panel. DON’T modify the camera in LayOut. Use the Camera properties from the scene in the SketchUp model.

Thanks again! Ive compared and I think have sorted out the problem at hand! However when printing, both yours and mine. The same issue appears - The 25m high buildings are 20. Is it something with my settings??

After looking more, (on my document) ive found out that one side is 15m the other 20m, when as previously said, it should be 25m everywhere. Your document has 20m on both sides. This leads me to believe there is a problem with my ISO camera when I put it on. But what?

Ive tried about everything. Still no resolve. Is it possible for you to have a look? Thank you!!!

25000 @ a scale of 1:500 is 50mm but you will only see that if you print in parallel projection.

I was curious so I tested this.
I made some cubes in SKP.
Set the view to the ‘ISO’ in parallel project.
Put dimensions on in SKP.
Send to LayOut.
Dimensioned in LayOut.

Note the dashed line in the PDF is drawn in LayOut without scale, so this doesn’t work to get proper dimensions in LayOut.

I spoke to an old architect friend earlier who thinks you can scale from certain “true” ISO drawings, but as you’ve demonstrated, I don’t think you can using the SketchUp ISO view.

ISO drawings in SketchUp are foreshortened in all planes - they are accurate in the picture plane. You can calculate an accurate scale that corrects the situation.

By “picture plane” do you mean the standard elevations?

Thanks - Ive read that thread now and I get the idea, although its probably best to just say that anything other than the standard parallel views should not be scaled as the lengths will almost certainly be distorted.

in the thread I’m giving a link to one of Eneroth’s extension, that can distort your model so it looks like an isometry with proper measurement when printed. it’s worth checking out I think.
