Issue with section planes- Gray, unable to move

Im having an issue with my section planes tool. When I apply a section plane it cuts just the surface, the plane grays out and I can’t move it. Section cuts, section fills, and section planes are all turned on. has anyone experienced these issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Share the .skp file so we can see what you’ve actually got set up.

Strange thing. I couldn’t select it either within the model space but I was able to select it in Outliner and then move it.

BTW, I did my usual cleanup of your model. Fixed incorrect tag usage.

And purged unused stuff from the model.

See if this one behaves better for you.

Thanks Dave! Yeah I don’t know what it is I can’t seem to find any info on it online

I haven’t seen that before but fortunately once selected in Outliner I was then able to select it in the model space.

Selecting the section plane in outliner still is not letting me move it around in the model

After it is selected are you grabbing it with the Move tool?

section

That works! So weird, I didn’t think there was anything to grab onto since its grayed out but it seems to be working… Thanks Dave! You’ve just saved me a lot of frustration.

still no highlighted edges like there usually are, but it is moving and cutting!

It doesn’t highlight when you select it in Outliner, either?

No sir, it moves but doesn’t highlight

Weird. Can you get the other section plane to highlight?

Maybe select the angled one in Outliner and delete it. Then add a new section plane?

By the way, there’s a very useful plugin called Zorro, which lets you slice objects as if with a knife, and also adds an extra function to the Section Planes - “Slice Model At Section”, which uses the Section Plane AS a knife.

Let’s say I need to cut this decorative beam to the angle of the roof.

Slice Model At Section - done. The beam is cut to the roof line.

VERY useful and saves a lot of time and frustration. Then you just delete the section plane and move on with life.

Couple of things to note:

1.) Make sure the section plane is in the context (group or component) of whatever you’re slicing, otherwise it will cut through the whole model.

2.) The cut edge is going to be empty (no face):

Why wouldn’t you just use solid tools or a solid tool plugin for that?

Are you using the new graphics engine?

What Mac do you have? Are you on M3 by chance? And what OS version - Sonoma, or Sequoia?

Upgrade to SKP 2024 if you haven’t already. It may or may not solve this particular problem but I found it less glitchy for me.

Have you tried copying all the geometry into a blank document and adding new cuts to see if it changes?
