Is sketchup 2024 OK with the new macOS 15 (Sequoia)?

So, that seems like some extension is not compatible. The fastest way to zero in on the culprit is to disable half of your extensions by renaming their registar files to .rb! and then try to start SketchUp. If it starts, one of the extensions in the disabled half is to blame, so repeat the process by enabling half of them. If it still fails, disable half of the remaining ones and try again.

Binary search! Great idea. Hadn’t thought of the renaming. I also saw that MacOS 15 “can’t open RBZ files” downloaded through Sketchup’s Extension Store. An oddity. Thanks!

Jumping immediately to the latest macOS is always a gamble. Apple has a history of making subtle changes whose effects on SketchUp sometimes take a while to be noticed. I’m staying with 14.7 until Trimble officially says it’s ok with 15.

I’ve been working with extensions, loading only the default su-* and find that SU works (mostly) normally under macOS Sequoia, so that’s encouraging. I narrowed the worst issue to a single extension, updated it and found that that extension now works. I’m in the process of identifying extensions that can be updated or removed to restore full or nearly-full functionality. Like we used to hear in tech, “You can identify the pioneers by the arrows in their backs.”

ETA on when an update compatible with macOS 15 will be released?

This is true. Both SketchUp and Layout crash all the time for me and I’m running macOS Sonoma 14.7. Is it related to macOS itself or Dropbox syncing issues? Not sure, but I’ve just learned to accept it.

officially compatible?
sketchup 2025 should be released in feb / march.

I’m running sonoma 14.7 on a standard M1 and zero crash. working on a sync’ed file on the ohter hand is a known source of trouble…

I don’t have a Crystal Ball. According to my experience, the change you are interested in is released exactly when it is ready for release. Of course, there can be exceptions…

Edit, I just got the information:

It will be after next week.

I don’t know how much after…

Yes, I’m leaning towards Dropbox syncing being the cause also. I’m running on an M1 Max.

Syncing services are fine if they’re not active all the time. if you have the possibility to sync at a certain time everyday, you reduce the risk of crash / corrupted file
but if it’s live sync, or worse, you’re actually working on a file that is online then it’s not great, a bit like forking from a usb stick.

Have you checked Trimble connect ? it’s included with your subscription, it’s (kinda) like trimble’s google drive (I’m sure someone will come and sigh at my definition)

you can work on a local copy and sync it in TC, it’ll keep all the successive versions to be reused later, and you can upload / store other related files (not just SU)

Thank you for the clarification. The company I work for uses Dropbox exclusively, so that’s my only option.

So save locally, and then upload manually or sync to Dropbox later. Just don’t work off of the file on Dropbox
