So, that seems like some extension is not compatible. The fastest way to zero in on the culprit is to disable half of your extensions by renaming their registar files to .rb! and then try to start SketchUp. If it starts, one of the extensions in the disabled half is to blame, so repeat the process by enabling half of them. If it still fails, disable half of the remaining ones and try again.
Binary search! Great idea. Hadn’t thought of the renaming. I also saw that MacOS 15 “can’t open RBZ files” downloaded through Sketchup’s Extension Store. An oddity. Thanks!
Jumping immediately to the latest macOS is always a gamble. Apple has a history of making subtle changes whose effects on SketchUp sometimes take a while to be noticed. I’m staying with 14.7 until Trimble officially says it’s ok with 15.
I’ve been working with extensions, loading only the default su-* and find that SU works (mostly) normally under macOS Sequoia, so that’s encouraging. I narrowed the worst issue to a single extension, updated it and found that that extension now works. I’m in the process of identifying extensions that can be updated or removed to restore full or nearly-full functionality. Like we used to hear in tech, “You can identify the pioneers by the arrows in their backs.”
ETA on when an update compatible with macOS 15 will be released?
This is true. Both SketchUp and Layout crash all the time for me and I’m running macOS Sonoma 14.7. Is it related to macOS itself or Dropbox syncing issues? Not sure, but I’ve just learned to accept it.
officially compatible?
sketchup 2025 should be released in feb / march.
I’m running sonoma 14.7 on a standard M1 and zero crash. working on a sync’ed file on the ohter hand is a known source of trouble…
I don’t have a Crystal Ball. According to my experience, the change you are interested in is released exactly when it is ready for release. Of course, there can be exceptions…
Edit, I just got the information:
It will be after next week.
I don’t know how much after…
Yes, I’m leaning towards Dropbox syncing being the cause also. I’m running on an M1 Max.
Syncing services are fine if they’re not active all the time. if you have the possibility to sync at a certain time everyday, you reduce the risk of crash / corrupted file
but if it’s live sync, or worse, you’re actually working on a file that is online then it’s not great, a bit like forking from a usb stick.
Have you checked Trimble connect ? it’s included with your subscription, it’s (kinda) like trimble’s google drive (I’m sure someone will come and sigh at my definition)
you can work on a local copy and sync it in TC, it’ll keep all the successive versions to be reused later, and you can upload / store other related files (not just SU)
Thank you for the clarification. The company I work for uses Dropbox exclusively, so that’s my only option.
So save locally, and then upload manually or sync to Dropbox later. Just don’t work off of the file on Dropbox
Dear all,
I have been using SU for a few weeks now with a iMac (2019 - Intel), and updated recently to Sequoia 15.0.1 (I read afterwards I shouldn’t have done this … my bad).
Nevertheless, it seems to work quite well, except that I cannot “install” twilight_OSXx64_V2_Hobby.rbz.
When I do so, the installation seems to work fine, but I cannot see it in the toolbar. When I restart SU24, I have an error message, which indicates that something went wrong during the installation.
I looked into the posts, and the phenomenon looks really similar to the “M1” issue. However, I do not have a “Mx” proc, so I cannot use the “rosetta” trick.
Did anybody here face the same issue, and, ideally, found a solution please?
Btw, I also have access to SUPro licence, but cannot use it on my iMac due to issue with “colors palette” (see here: Recent macOS updates leading to a crash when using the Colors palette in all versions of SketchUp)
Thank you all!
hi,
twilight render stopped development on jan 1st 2024. Sketchup 2024 came a few month later with an upgrade in the ruby version it uses - and that extension use - causing some older extension to not launch. the startup message you’re seeing is likely related.
The solution is quite “simple”, the devs have to tweak a few things and it’s now compatible with the newest ruby. but as they stopped developing, I don’t know if they did the fix.
try contacting them asking if they did / plan on doing a small update for 2024+ compatibility.
you mean SU 2023 ? the colour palette crashing thing was solved in the latest 2023.1 update + subsequent sonoma and sequoia releases. or should have.
If Twilight render confirms they won’t be compatible with 2024+ then you might have to keep a 2023.1 installed on the side. Work in 2024, do everything there, and only launch 23.1 to render.
Hi Nab,
thank you for your message!
I will, but am not very hopeful …
I actually think it was both 2022 and 2023. But I will try again, with 2023.
Yep, this is a possibility, but not so easy, as I need to uninstall one to be able to launch/run the other one :-/ Hopefully, I made a mistake during the 2023 installation, and this will work perfectly I will let you know.
Thank you again!
what ? no you don’t.
you can have several version installed.
the only limitation is that you can only be connected in 2 version at once. in my case, 24 on my mac and 24 on my PC. if I need 23 on mac, I’ll have to log out from the PC.
yeah, in theory, if you’re using the latest 23.1 and the latest mac os you should be fine. I mean, unless sequoia breaks something again, just for the giggles
You are right!! I just tried it right now (after needed to disconnect/reconnect …) and it works fine (2024 and 2023 PRO) ==> Great! Thank you.
With 2023, Twilight can be installed AND, it seems that the other issue is solved as well … I assume I only tried 2022. I will work with this in the coming days and cross fingers …
Thank you very much.
Bye!
Did somebody say cp/m? I almost dropped my coffee on my keyboard, the flashbacks were so bright.
Im about to purchase a new mac Studio (M2) in the next few weeks. Im not sure if it will come with Sonoma or Sequoia installed - but from what Im hearing here- for most people there are no serious issues with Sketchup 2024 & Sequoia? I know it’s not “technically” supported, but it sounds as if the issues people are running into are minor irritations, not overall incompatibility?
Sequoia. if it’s a new machine, from the day Sequoia as released, it would have arrived with sequoia.
yeah, seems so. all good then
