Hello!

SketchUp was not working with the previous version. Crashed every few minutes. I rolled back from Sonoma with a Time Machine backup.
It works but it’s not officially supported and you may have random crashes, some people are having issues with sketchup on Sonoma. You shouldn’t update until all the software you use has support for Sonoma.
I’m sorry, did you come here to vent or to look for a solution?
a solution is above, rollback to ventura, it works. or wait for 2024. or provide a description of what doens’t work, how, when.
do you get bugsplat ? do you send them ? do you get macos crash reports ? can you send them by mp to colin ?
I mean, frikking give us something here.
if you came here only to rant, well, it’s done, what next ?
I did work out which line of code is leading to a crash. It’s a conflict between a third party library SketchUp uses, and macOS Sonoma. I’m hoping the developers have contacts with Apple and the third party, and can ask one or both to fix the problem.
The problem will appear more or less every session you run SketchUp 2022. With 2023 there may be a crash the first session, but should not happen after that.
The problem doesn’t happen until some time after a regular save is done. An auto save doesn’t trigger the issue. Which means there is a counterintuitive work around of not saving as you go along. If you forget yourself, and do a save, when a crash happens the save you did, the backup file, and the most recent auto save file should all be good. Even with 2022.
So, if you have a crash and reopen SketchUp, and see there is a recovery version of the file you are working on, give it a try.
I only figured out the issue with one of the developers right before the break. We haven’t yet had a chance to get more senior SketchUp people involved.
Hi. I’m new to SketchUp community. I recently purchased a M3 Max MacBook Pro excited with its ray tracing capabilities and finally move to macOS only to find SketchUp crashing frequently. I’m currently on macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 and after contacting support learnt that SketchUp was not supported on the latest OS. Are there any updates on when this will be supported on Sonoma?
Sketchup 2024 will for sure have full support for MacOS Sonoma, no one can give you specific dates of its release, even Trimble employees, Trimble has a, in my opinion, senseless secrecy policy. You can install Ventura in your Mac, don’t try to do it through apple’s geniuses, they’ll tell you that’s it’s not possible to do it but it is possible, there are tons of tutorials that show you how you can do it, you won’t lose your warranty and you can update to Sonoma when sketchup 2024 is released.
nope, not on a M3 machine.
It’s been a general rule with apple, for years (decades even, the osX era), you can’t install an older OS than the one your machine was delivered with.
During the very early weeks of the M3 series (non pro / ultra / max…) there were machines shipped with Ventura. those can rollback to ventura.
But any machine since then has been sold with Sonoma, meaning you can’t go beyond.
Here is a similar discussion on apple’s forums :

Schade, the only solution is to wait until Skp 2024 then. It could be released tomorrow or in two months.
That Sonoma is not supported yet doesn’t mean it won’t work.
Some people are having troubles, but there are also people who don’t…
I bought a MBP M3 in November '23. One crash, followed straight away by a consecutive update by Sketchup. So that gives me the impression they’re right on top of it.
Sonoma 14.2.1 (23C71)
For me, it crashes 2023 every time and it is even easy to reproduce the crash every time just by opening some palettes.
If you get a crash by opening or rearranging palettes other than Colors, can you give me the steps that lead to a crash?
I can send you a video if you want to.
Happens in 2022 and in 2023. It is macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 (latest) on iMac 5K (Intel chipset, not Apple Silicon)
That one involves the Colors palette, which we have already a fix ready to come out.
Do you get crashes with any other palettes, not involving the Colors one?
Could you tell when the fix to the Colors palette will come out? Is the fix in a newer version of SketchUp? If yes, which version?
2024
it’ll be in sketchup 2024. soon I hope.
Trimble employees are not allowed to say anything about future releases, I just hope that sketchup 2024 is released in 2024, probably it will be a huge release after all the delay.
