Hi, I´m on Macbook Pro with M1 Pro, and still use Ventura 13.16.2 and SketchUp 2022. My Mac has been asking me for upgrading to Sonoma 14.16.1.for a while now, but I´m so afraid that it will impact working in SketchUp. Does anyone have experience with upgrading to Sonoma, and will it be safe to also upgrade to SketchUp 2023 ?
Yes you should update both. Your operating system and sketchup version are both years out of date and you’ve passed up on several updates for no good reason.
do you have to ? no.
but next year 2022 will become unsupported and you’ll loose direct access to the warehouses (from within SU)
so in the next 6 month you might need to.
if you remain on Ventura, you can safely upgrade to 23 and 24. most of the issues with 24 are on PC and on high end macs (M3 chips), your M1 chip should be safe.
should you update to Sonoma ? well, is there anything in sonoma you absolutely need in term of new tools and functions ? if so, yes, do upgrade right now.
if not, then you don’t HAVE to. Apple still supports ventura (they just released a security fix), you’re fine on this front. Also, there were various issues with 22/23 and sonoma, they came and went with successive upgrades on Apple’s side.
Personally, I switched to sonoma in june, when it was more stable so I used su24 with ventura for a few month.
if you plan on only switching to SU23, ventura might be better.
Whatever you choose, keep in mind that you can have several versions of SU installed. you can keep your 22 just in case for a few weeks while you try 23 or even 24.
Regarding mac os, if you’re doing backups of your machine, you’ll be able to rollback to ventura if anything bothers you in sonoma.
Im notorious for waiting 9-12 months for upgrades. I skipped SKU 2023. In June I also finally had to jump off and upgrade to SKU 2024 and Sonoma. I was not comfortable with the idea because I kept reading the forums and paying attention to the problems.
While Sonoma has been a treat honestly, Sketchup 2024 has had a few issues. Nothing that has kept me from delivering my product to my customers though. It starts every day. Crashes are of similar occurrence to 2022. Layout render engine is a definite plus. No issues there at all. They really nailed that part.
Im on a 2019 M1 Max MacBook Pro just for comparison.
I was a victim of some or most of those issues for awhile, but I’m happy to report they seem to have cleared up in the recent week with the last update to macOS 14.6. I’m now running SketchUp with the new graphics engine, and things seem very stable for the time being.
yeah, sonoma could be dubbed as “security edition”, they touched a lot of little things that caused problems in many softwares from update to update. 14.3 broke 23’s materials, 14.4 unbroke it… I had problems with porting kit (playing Age of empire 2 on mac) with 14.4 though, and it got fixed in 14.5
glad to hear 14.6 could be more stable for SU users.
