I design planting plans in Sketchup by using components that I created in Sketchup. I have them set up by Common Name, Botanical Name, Quantities, Size and a Key.
Is it possible to label selections of the same component in Layout with any tool?
It works great for single labels, but I would like to select clusters of plants and label them efficiently.
There is no way to automatically apply a label in Layout to various SketchUp components.
However, you can have a label with autotext that you manually copy/stamp around your Layout file - the text would auto-populate based on the object the leader is pointing to.
Here is an example of what I was referring to. Rather then labelling every plant individually, it would be great to quickly label a count from the components that I have set up in my model.
I think this would be a good use case for the Generate Report function in SketchUp if you aren’t already doing that to generate your schedule table.
You can also give each plant component an Instance and then use autotext ComponentInstance to quickly label without taking up the real estate on your page.
There’s currently no way to automatically label the qty of instances. You can append a Component Definition Label to add qty from, say a Generated Report. Or, depending on the number different plant symbols you have, right-clicking and choosing ‘select all instances’ and using that number is a quick way to get a count for each plant species. It would be ideal if there was an ‘instance qty’ definition that would be updatable in real time. Perhaps @trent can add that to the LayOut Product Roadmap.
Thank you Nick and Eric.
I already generate schedules through SU and I think that’s where it ends for quick labelling for the moment. I just wanted to make sure I’m not missing anything.
Maybe down the road there will be a function for cluster labels.
Thanks again guys, happy modelling!
Hi Joe. Are you using auto text to label? If not, that will help speed up your process. If you have a format you like, you may consider adding that to your scrapbook. On your plant schedule, I believe you can accomplish this through SU report and import into LayOut. I’m working on a similar method but have not yet done the heavy lifting inputing the data (botanical name, common name, etc) into my symbols.
I did a quick test run and it is possible to create your plant schedule using native tools in SU and LayOut. You’ll need to create a custom template in Generate Report. In your template, select the attributes you want (common name, botanical name, etc). Run the report, then download. In LayOut, insert the CSV file. It will import as a table. Update the style to your liking and adjust placement.
Let me know if that works for you. Good luck. I am rooting for your success!
Next in the List would be 5D+ Auto Info which can create beautiful lists AND can now drop them directly into Sketchup (Haven’t tried that particular feature yet, but I am sure it works).
This way you’d have your schedule in Sketchup and so you just need a viewport in Layout that points to that schedule.
