Inference is not working

This new version of SU is driving me made. Apart from the frequent crashes, the inference locking isn’t working. I can move an object and lock the green and red directions but the blue just wonders all over the place. Have they changed how it is supposed to work?
I was trying to video it but I need both hands on the keyboard and mouse.

Is it possible the object is a component with gluing? If you right click on it, is there an Unglue entry in the context menu? Can you share the .skp file so we can see what you are trying to move?

Thanks Dave as always.
I can’t it is huge and confidential.
It is a group and the unglue option is greyed out.
I have found that I can copy it and the inference works but if I try to just move it the inference locking doesn’t work.
This version is really getting frustrating to use.

Hmmm … That’s weird. I haven’t seen anything like that.

I don’t know what to tell you since I can’t see the file

I have managed to move it by copying. I am seriously thinking of reverting back to the stable previous version until this one has been debugged properly.

Thank you for your help though. It is appreciated.

I logged a bug report only a couple of days ago, about a moving in the blue direction issue that looks like it has always been a problem.

If you make a group out of something in the face of another object, then try to move the new group in a direction away from the original face, it fails to work. It’s behaving as if it is stuck to the face. If the face is in the blue direction, the group will slide around in the red and green directions.

I hadn’t hit that combination in over 20 years of using SketchUp, so I thought it might be a 2024 issue. But, the same problem happens in 2017.

The same thing has always happened if making a component on an ungrouped face. I suppose groups get the gluing property too. Since I don’t use groups in my modeling I have never noticed it with them.

I just tested this with a group in SketchUp 3.1. The group is glued to the ungrouped face. Right clicking on the group shows the option to Unglue. Clicking that release the object so it’ll move vertically.

It’s exactly the same in SketchUp 2024. Hard to say that one is a bug. More like a designed feature.

Good point, I may add a note to my bug report, and close it.

Is this still an active thread? I’m having exactly the same issue. SU 2024 on windows 11. Working with two groups joined together into a ‘container’ group. One of the groups just will not lock to anything on the red axis. Seems to be related to that group. Copy works fine, issue is with move. FYI

Share the model so we can see what you’ve got.

I seem to remember that some things related to nested groups were fixed in SketchUp 2025.

Hi I got around it by copying the object that I was struggling with. I don’t seem to have had the same issue since then.
