Imported .3ds is missing architectural panel relief lines

When I import my .3ds model into SketchUp, the house exterior texture is missing all relief lines that should be visible around each architectural panel.

I did see a lot of ‘unable to create’ materials and colors messages during the import.

Is there anything I can do to bring the .3ds into SketchUp with the panel lines?

I’m new to SketchUp. Any help is appreciated.

Imported into SketchUp:

Did you import it into SketchUp Go? Did you add the textures when you imported?

I don’t know about the Web version, but the import options of the desktop version has a “delete coplanar edges” option - this might be the result of having it checked. Unchecking it would probably result to the import being in triangles, though. 3DS is in many respects an antiquated format - do you have some other option?

My Subscription is for SketchUp Go. It shows SketchUp for Web as the application. Does that mean I imported it into SketchUp Go?

Regarding “did I add the textures when I imported”, the import process never gave me any option to add textures.

You have SketchUp Studio in your profile, which is the license for the desktop version of SketchUp.

You posted the message in the SketchUp for Web section, which is the web version of SketchUp. Go is the license for the web version of SketchUp and allows you to import several types of files, including 3ds.

When you exported from Chief A, did it generate a 3ds file and one or more jpg/png files (textures)? If so, and you imported only the 3ds file into SketchUp for Web (Go), the program don’t import the rest of the files from your hard drive and does not restore the paths to those files either.
You have to import them all at once, and you can do this if you archive them first and import only a zip file.

From the program you exported from, don’t you have other export options, such as DAE, OBJ?

Thanks for helping.

That SketchUp Studio was a trial I had a while back but is no longer active.

When I go here, I see two accounts. Neither of which seem to be for the SketchUp Go Subscription I just paid for:.

When I go here, I see the Go Subscription with SketchUp for Web:

To answer your question, I didn’t export the 3ds from Chief A myself. The General Contractor building my house emailed it to me. So, I guess I will have to ask him to Export again by archiving all the texture files along with the 3ds all as a zip file. Then I will import the zip file all at once.

I’ll also ask him if he has DAE, OBJ or other export options.

I just tried importing the 3ds file again by following this instruction on how to import 3ds into SketchUp, but now I’m not getting any model to appear in SketchUp.

  1. Launch SketchUp: Open SketchUp and create a new project. Make sure you have the right template set up for your import.

  2. Import into SketchUp: Go to File > Import. Select the file format you exported from Chief Architect (e.g., .3ds or .dxf) and locate your file. Click Import.

  3. Adjust Your Model: Once imported, you may need to adjust textures and materials to match your original design. Use the Materials panel in SketchUp to refresh your model’s aesthetics.

Steps 1 and 2 seem to work. At Step 2 there’s a progress indicator and it takes a while to complete, so it seems to be working. But then when SketchUp opens to this view there is nothing there. No model to work with.

That may be the case, but it’s still on your profile, and those you ask for help follow it to offer you solutions, which differ depending on the version of SketchUp you’re using.

I just downloaded a random model from 3D Warehouse and exported it as a 3ds file.
I imported it as I already wrote, as a zip file, which contains the 3ds file (the 3D model) and jpg files (the textures).
In SketchUp for Web I just softened and smoothed the edges and that’s it. It’s working!
