I’m having a touble opening the sketchup file (this does not apppear to be a sketchup file) what i have to do
1.skp (4.0 MB)
That file is filled with zeros. It isn’t a document of any kind.
Do you have a .SKB file in the same folder?
yes i have skb file in the folder
I’m having trouble opening a file in Sketchup Pro 2023. I can see the reduced view image of the file but after clicking on it to open it, there’s a longer-than-usual delay and then the program automatically closes. The same thing happens when trying to open version 2022
Share the file so we can try to help you out.
Dave,
I’m still trying to reach someone at SketchUp to help me open a file that appears in the “recent files” location but won’t open
Is this the best way to discuss the matter or should I try something else?
As I asked two days ago, share the .skp file so we can take a look and try to help you out. It may be that I can get it to open and get you sorted out or maybe Colin will have some success. Without the file, though, we surely can’t help.
It’s not a good idea and it’s against the forum rules to include your address, e-mail address, and phone numbers in forum posts. This is a public forum and your information is now available to anyone who wants it including the various bots that troll forums for this kind of stuff. You should edit your post and remove that content.
I edited your post and took all the signature information out. As @DaveR mentioned, that’s not a good idea, and against the forum rules.
Dave,
I reached out to you last month regarding my being unable to open an .skp file in newly downloaded Sketchup 2023. You asked me to share the file but, because it was too big to attach to an email, I provided a Dropbox link. Because I didn’t hear back from you, I went onto a few different Sketchup message boards to see if I could get an answer but nothing relevant was posted
Could you please give me specific instructions on how I might be able to open my .skp file? Please note that all of my other files opened up just fine in 2023 and I’m having problems with only this one
Thanks,
Jim
Jim,
Where did you attach the link. I never saw it.
Post the link here so I can take a look or perhaps @colin will be able to have a try.
Please edit your previous forum post to remove your contact info.
It’s trying to open. I’ll see what I get.
Please edit your last two posts and remove the contact information.
Thanks. Sorry didn’t realize that information was being included. Will pay closer attention…
FWIW, It took a long time but I have your file open in SketchUp. I’m looking to see what can be done to improve its performance. You have a lot of trees that have an awful lot of geometry which isn’t helping. I’ll keep digging though.
Thanks Dave…
So there are a number of issues working against you in this model. First, incorrect tag usage. ALL edges and faces should be untagged. This is the result of correcting that.
Next, hoarding unused stuff doesn’t help. Purging the file would help.
There are a number of excessively large texture images remaining after purging the file.

As I mentioned the huge number of trees and plants that are highly detailed really bog down your model. This gets compounded by having Profiles displayed in the style and having Shadows turned on.
The cleanup I did reduced the file size by about a third. I’ve set the style to not show materials in hopes that your computer will handle it better.
There are a bunch of incorrectly oriented faces that should be fixed. There should be no exposed blue back faces in your model.
There’s a lot of what appears to be extraneous geometry down near the groundplane and it odd that your model is nearly half a mile above the groundplane.
Here is the purged version of the model.
I also made a version in which I stripped out the heavy plants, deleted the extraneous geometry and moved the model down to the ground plane. This one should be even easier to work with. It’s about 43% smaller than your original. I would suggest that you stick with lighter-weight plants. You’ve already got some. Use more of that sort.
Thanks Dave!
